Sorry to be a grouch but it seems to me that we are starting to go down the American road of advetising what horses people are taking to shows ( particularly Malvern), what they've already won, the colour and any other distiguishing features. Surely we may as well give the judge the catalogue beforehand as I'm sure many of them visit this sight. I'm sorry but in my book that's cheating.

By all means say you are going but leave the details of the horses for the judge to see on the day.

I feel very strongly about this as the moral standards in life generally are continually slipping and should be put right earlier rather than later.

Rant over and this is a general complaint not personal.

Jean

Thank you Jean, I'm sure that no one is trying to "cheat" but you have a good point here as one of the judges rang me yesterday about the time table she'd seen on AL. So they do look on here.

Surely the Judges should choose (in their opinion) the best horses on the day, regardless of prior advertising, etc. - or am I just dreaming?

I am sure the Judges at the Nationals will be unbiased and completely ethical, if not the audience will choose their favourites anyway with regard to future breeding/bloodlines/type/usefulness, etc.

Tahir, Of course we trust the judges to do what they will on the day or we wouldn't go to the shows any way, but I don't think bad manners are acceptable under any circumstances and I'm sure in some cases it isn't intentional. However in this age of ego boosts and self promotion I find it all rather sad.

I am not at all competitive and results don't count for a lot in my opinion. Left to me my horses probably wouldn't go anywhere. I know what I like and am happy just leaning on the gate watching them.

Jean

I hasten to add it happens in all sections of the Arab world.

I totally agree Jean, and I would also rather sit at home, lean on the gate and watch my little herd - they give me so much pleasure

Self promotion is rather sad (and rude), and a bit like advertising in any sphere, eg. If you keep pounding away at Joe Public they will eventually succumb and realise that your 'product' has to be the best in the world because they have heard 'the name' somewhere.

That's surely one of the aspects of the Arab that is so contentious - the fact that people buy them and show them for reasons of beauty and can't wait to show them off. I wonder if the majority are in-hand? It would be fascinating to know. I can't think of another breed where such a big proportion of the horses bred are preserved for breeding and in-hand showing. It follows (I remember a couple of months ago being gobsmacked at a description on AL of the US version of buying hugely expensive Arabs for in-hand showing) that people are going to want to shout about their breathtaking Arabs and their credentials.

I'm sure it's just enthusiasm at the moment, but I can see Britain going the same way as the US if a firm hand isn't applied!

I'd hope against hope judges wouldn't be influenced by people's descriptions of their horses on Arabian Lines!!

LOL Kimzi - what class is Norah entered into and how many 'Championships' has she already taken? Not that I'm biased

We agree with Jean, Your own Horse is your best advert, One problem do they believe their own hype, We took two British national titles last year and no adverts
Quite often photographs can we say be played with,And in the Flesh the subject disappoints you,so there is a downside as well,
And some Horses never seem to take a good photo, while others are photogenic,
And then the more laughable aspect to tell the World i have this (Big Hair trainer an American way of saying face showing my Horse)

Montikka may not be a class but i'm sure there's a few guiness world record attempts we could try after a few bottles of vino - i'd better state to any wannebe brainiacs that she may be typey enough but explosives are definetley not allowed on board, but richard hammond is more than welcome.
