Today at 2.30pm out in the field, Misti finally had a gorgeous colt foal. She is so proud of him! He is 83% Crabbet (approx) and so cute.
His colouring was a total shock however! We were expecting chestnut!!! Any idea's what colour he'll be?

I did wonder, as mum is now fleebitten but was jet black when born. What is strange is that both the other foals that she had to this same stallion started off life chestnut and turned grey eventually!! Isn't genetics a strange thing?! |

His eyelashes are black Libby, so I suspect you are right and he'll turn grey eventually.
Thanks everyone. Be prepared for photo overload as the months go on!! |

Another couple of shots 2 days later! They aren't fantastic as it was 9pm and the light was starting to go. We'd been out all day and of course it's then I decide to take piccies:

Thanks Gerri. I kind of thought that might be the case! Mum was black at birth and took until she was about 8 years old to start going grey properly. She was a fab steel grey for several years and I'm looking forward to seeing that in him. These shots were taken yesterday:

Thanks Nikki and Gerri. He is really quite special to me. I've waited a long time for this foal.
For those of you who wanted to see Dad, here he is. St Narreth King Dancer aka Kalif
This was Misti and I in action from about 4 years ago:

If she is the one I found on allbreed then the colour is a bit surprising, chestnut x grey parents for the mare.
This does mean that she can produce chestnut and grey foals, and possibly a colour that is dominant from the sire used. Very interesting, as sire looks liver chestnut, and these are often used when trying to breed for black.
My Alileo born last year is still brown, flaxen chestnut dam, grey sire, but a grey from a black x grey background. We still 'expect' him to go grey, but no signs yet. let us know if he does grey out,. |

You are right Pat, Misti's parents are grey and chestnut! (Samyr x Ksenia) All Misti's previous foals have been chestnut and gone grey very quickly. However this is the first foal to this sire, who is as you say liver chestnut. Most of the horses in his lines have been chestnut with the odd bay here and there, which is why I wondered if perhaps my foal may go bay? I'm not sure if that colouration would be bay from the word go though?
I find the whole gene colouration saga very interesting. |

Dhessi had a strange colour for a period of time, he was a sort of grey roan colour with a chestnut belly, he was a bit like a strange fresion cow for a while. He then went the Steel grey which was great, oh how I wished he was going to stay that colour. Hes just starting to get flea bitten now.
Hes gorgeous tho! |
