Well the day arrived, the first time I'v been on Amani since last year, I gave him plenty time off to get the weight up and build some trust between us. Would have been on sunday but i couldnt catch the little monster think he sensed the occasion So at almost a year on since I got him we have went from a little skittery skinny unhappy pony to a cheeky cocky little monster. I think its because iv been on a min of 16.2 recently, but im paranoid that im too big? So any opinions appreciated. I need to lose about a stone (Holding onto the winter layer for as long as possible!) Anyway the befores and nows:

Would normally have my stirrups down a hole or two more? Am I just being a paranoid mother?

And just had to post one of my boys together

Kharif,
Wow, what a transformation. He looks to be in fantastic condition now, and no, I don't think you look too big on him - you look great!

Here's to many more rides!

Hi, I know what you mean about the winter layer! The problem is you know it's there - and so does your horse, probably - but clothes cover it nicely. (thank goodness!)

I used to worry that at 10st and 5'7" I was too big for my 14.3 pba; I think it's because of the hangover from 'big horse syndrome' perhaps? I've been riding her for about 5 years now, and she's fine. I realised lately that I had been sitting too far forward, worrying about my weight being too far back on her loins; but it's actually important to keep your weight back so that the centre of gravity is kept back and they can use their back legs properly - we're not tipping them forward on to their forehand! (just thought it might be useful for you or someone else!)

Look around for some pictures of the old dressage masters; many of them have their stirrups down to well below the horse's belly, and they look fine!

Beautiful pictures, btw! well done for doing such a great job.

Definitely not too big...! You both look great. What a transformation...!

My boy is 14.2hh and i weigh 11st (Actually 10st 9 this morning... yipee) and i'm always paranoid i'm to heavy for him. But he never collapses when i get on (always stands still) and he is still rearing to go when we are on our way home..

You look much slimmer than me in your picture, in fact you both look great.

My horse is my very best friend. Nothing in the world can separate us. When he dies I know he'll be waiting for me at the gate... just like always.

A horse doesn't care how much you know, untill he knows how much you care.

sfa dreamon as in by r magic out of edykiah? i worked at sfa when he was born. he was one of 4 foals born that year. I remeber him as he was really skittish but smart! edykiah was what you would call overprotective lol once she let me get to him he was a lovely little chap he loved cuddles and was quick to learn, she had lots of quirks like going nuts at the gate if she wasnt brought in by 5 pm and hated her water bucket to be put in the wrong place lol. My gelding is a grandaughter of hers through his mum who was by fawor. I see lots of family traits in him.
I cant believe how bad he looked in that 1st pic the poor love but he looks fab now!

Hi all, thanks for the comments, feel much better now :) Guess ill just get used to it again.

He is indeed SFA Dreamon by r magic out of edykiah.I spoke to Liz (he was still registered to her) and she told me all about edykiah, hes pretty similar he loves routine. He is also very smart, loves learning new things so hopefully he will enjoy getting ridden now. If you have any further info on where he went or if anyone knows where he has been can you let me know, I want to know where it all went wrong. I got him last year from a local riding school, she had bought him from a friend whos son is a farriers apprentice. The farrier had been to stables and seen two arabs and bought them. He was still a stallion and supposidly they couldnt handle him at all. Hes still very cuddly he will walk into you and lean on you to demand them.

Yeah I can get all down his legs now and he lifts the fronts on command :) The back he wont lift yet but we are getting there. Had my farrier out about a month ago and he had his fronts done. We had to twitch him but he stood like a star once they started.

Don't forget the ancestry of these HORSES.
Used as re-mounts for the cavalries in many countries.
As war horses in the deserts.
If they are fit and up to their proper condition and body weight they can carry a man into battle.
Sure they can manage an English rose with or without 'winter weight'.

Quarter horses, admittedly stockier, are often only around 14hh to 15hh. I know one champion QH which at just around 14hh carries a 6ft. odd rider of 13stone with no ill effect and has done so in top competiton for many years.

My sister has QH and I have Arabs..she is 5ft 7" and I am 5ft 9", we both agree that there is a British obsession with big horses.
I think that anything over 15-2 is a waste of space....literally of course...can't get on again either without something to stand on !!!
