If the mare is bright, eating up and acting normal......then all must be well....observation and patience is all you can do......foal will make an appearance soon as it (probably he) decides he wants out!!

The last time my mare was late, she had a colt and she is late again, so will be interested to see if your theory is right Margo.

Fingers crossed she goes soon....I had 2 maiden mares last year and one older lady on her 10th foal - both maidens popped on their due dates, the other was an experienced mum and went 3 weeks early - all colts

I have had colts born early and on their due dates - so I think that kicks that theory out of the window. I just wish I could breed a filly.

Good luck everyone - hope you get what you want.

My TB mare went 2 weeks overdue while I shredded my nails and nerves thinking OMG it's dead... but had a lovely colt foal so maybe what they say about boys is true. More to the point - TB mares are big,(mine is 16.2hh) their foals tend to be big (14hh at 10mths, almost as big as his sire) to suit the dam, so they are going to take a bit longer in the womb to reach their birthweight. So just relax and install the remote Cctv monitor in your bedroom....

Well suneagle, our maiden 17yr old mare, foaled THIRTY THREE days late and produced a beautiful filly, both were happy and healthy. So don't lose hope as my vet said they will arrive when the foal is ready to be born - she was obviously quite warm and happy inside waiting for just the right time.

Foalie will make an appearance when it is ready not before. Maiden mares invariably go over, better over than premature, filly fascination is all very well but to get a a live healthy foal is more important.

Do horses eat pineapple? In humans it is supposed to be lobster, pineapple, champagne and curry (and sex) that are the urban legends for speeding things up. Other than pineapple, the others don't seem to apply!

has she foaled yet.dont worry if not,my maiden tb mare went month late then produced fab pb filly. next time went 15 days late had stunning filly. this year only 6 days late and we have a fantastic anglo colt. they come when they are ready whatever the sex and seems the extra bit of cooking only improves the result. as mentioned before, better late than early. do let us know when the little darling finally puts in an appearence. sally

Mine have all been late - and all been fillies Although it was nice when a couple of my mares decided to foal close to their due date and not keep me waiting for a month over like my first foal!

Congrats all and the wait was worthwhile in the end...and a filly

I think the theory of carrying colt foals longer than fillies, depends on the Mare`s gestation `pattern` Almost without exception, my mares carried colt foals up to two weeks longer than they did fillies, and after a few foalings I was rarely wrong in guessing which sex was going to be born. My thoroughbred Mare was the opposite.....always carrying filly foals beyond the due date...but the boys invariably came early!!!
