Oh Egbert, what a testament!! Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to dig into your research and personal knowledge to come up with all that. I shall copy this down and keep in in my files and treasure it.
I will get pictures of Lance and Andrus scanned in. I might be able to put a link here of Lance in the field. I did once manage to post a picture here but have completely forgotten how to do it. Perhaps I can mail a picture or two to Jude and she will upload them.
Andrus was grey (snow white!) and very elegant indeed. He was reserve world champion 1998, losing the title after a tie, and on the third or fourth tier of marks. Also European liberty champion the same year and 1999 Platin Cup Champion Stallion. Unfortunately he was sold on from Germany to Italy and died (in mysterious circumstances) a few months later. An accident I fear.
Lance certainly can move and looks very regal when he does, but I just know I won't be able to keep up with him! I shall have to ask for some help to do in-hand.
I will also do what research I can on the ancestors you mention. You are indeed right about him being an ugly duckling turning into a swan. At two, he was hairy, lanky and a rather muddy rose grey and I took a chance on him because I had a 'feeling' about him, but he had some good shows under saddle aged six - eight, and has come into his own visually in the last year or two, as you indicate. His neck has really developed (without sweats or anything else!) However I haven't shown him very much over the last two years but I hope to put that right next year!
What a great story you tell about Rossana. I'm always very impressed by horses that are happy to fly or go on ferries without turning a hair. (There's a great story in Horse and Hound this week about a woman who rode one of the Shires hundreds of miles from the Isle of Skye, off Scotland to Cumbria and it had to go on a ferry with only a rope as a barrier around the platform of the boat!). I guess an elevator is similar. What fabulous temperament. I can't wait to see photos of her, Rodania and Kuhailan Haifi.
My friend Alison (Grey Girl on AL) has made a fabulous poster of her Arab mare Amelia and all her ancestors and I think it would be nice to do the same about Lance. I shall try to find and post these photographic links, and if not will ask Jude to do so.
Again thank you very much for all the effort you've put in. What a mine of information you are!! I think your seminar will be crowded out.

Roseanne, Andrus more than lives up to his pedigree and am over the moon to see that Lance does as well! Wow! What a joy to see these boys! Thank you so much for sharing and Kirsty thank you for posting them!

Jingo, what cool pictures! Thank you very much - for those photos show his scope and refinement.

Roseanne, You are welcome and am so glad you will be showing him. You will just have to start working out so you can keep up with Lance. In the meantime, here is Rossana:

Egbert, thank you so much for the encouragement, and the nice words about Lance and the links! Those pictures have all been saved in my Lance file. That's been a really valuable exercise and I'm most grateful to you. I think your visit here is going to give us all so much...
I still haven't managed to go through all 26 pages of this thread. Have pictures of Lalique and Menes gone up yet? I do have one or two of those.

Jude, thank you for posting those pictures. I was a bit reluctant to ask knowing how busy you are, and having the worry of Surita to nurse at the moment.
And Kirsty, thank you very much for posting those. I must learn how to do that. Much as I'd have liked, I'm afraid I have to admit to NOT being Andrus's owner. He went from Gucci to a woman called Christina Lange in Germany and then on to Italy where he died only months after arriving.

As chance would have it, I went to collect some 'liberated' battery hens (through Arabian Lines!) today and met Philip and Lulu (who has Raymondo) and they have a video of Andrus at Paris being shown by Emma Maxwell. They are letting me have a copy. It will be the first time I will have seen him, except for a photo.

Thank you all!

Can't wait Jude. I hope there are some I don't have already! I liked Sue Jones' obituary of Menes in the defunct Arabian Link - it was a side view of his head and Lance def has the same expression!!

Veronica - It's not that I'm not fit, I just can't run very fast or for very far. I can keep going working in the field all day and ride and then come in and do the housework, shopping etc etc - but I don't have the 'sprint' factor. Also, I would only be able to get him to pose naturally, though when he gets exuberant in the field, I can really see what he can do; his neck is arched and he trots BIG with his head absolutely still with the elevated body following it. I long to have a video with me at times like that so people could believe what I'm seeing! I'm sure we've all felt like that.
The temptation to get a professional handler (a kind one) is very great because you'd just be so proud to see someone being able to replicate that in a show ring; especially if the judge thought the same.

You beat me to it Jude. Thanks. What a gorgeous boy! Was he ever ridden? I hope so! And how tall was he?
Sue Jones' article said his stud fee (to chosen mares only) was 25,000 dollars, after the American consortium had bought him for about 1.25million dollars. So only the very wealthy could afford to breed to him once in the US. I do have another couple of him if you want me to send them. Will check now...

You know, it has been so interesting looking at the *Menes photos-Thank You, JUDE!-and studying his pedigree made me have one of those 'revelations' that might serve as a learning experience for those interested at just how strong the British lines in his pedigree are. So in the interests of education...Lets see how you all do:

What is his sire line?

What is his dam line?

What is his strain?

What horses are the most influential in his pedigree?

Why has *Menes proven to be such an influential breeding stallion?

Just looking at the photos, I would say Kuhailan. But his head says something else??? I am totally out of my depth here, but Kuhailan just sprang to mind, but with another major influence??? HELP???

I'm gonna cheat and go on allbreedspedigree.

Ok here's my attempt

Sire line = Bairactar 'the oldest existing stallion family in Poland today. Acquired in the desert 1817 by Baron von Fechtig. Served at Weil until his death in 1838.' strain = Seglavi Jedran

Dam line = Sahara 'Sahara was a grey Kohejlan-Moradi acquired in the desert by Count Juliusz Dzieduszycki and imported to Jarczowce in 1845. Her daughter Sahara Slepka was foaled during the journey from Arabia.'

Would this make Menes strain a Kohejlan Moradi?

Significant horse in the pedigree I would say Arax:

'Bred by Klemensów. 2/18(5-5-2) Leading Russian Sire 1959 - 1969. Sired 101 foals in Russia (52 Fillies/49 Colts) (Amurath-Sahib x Angara)1952 bay stallion14.3 hands pure Polish in breedingbred by Klemensow PolandBairactar sire linestood at Michalow in 1957later went to Russia where he was used as sire atTersk from 1958 - 1969In 1969, Arax was purchased by Dr. Houtappel'

I will keep studying for the rest of the answers

Another significant horse carrying three lines is Ofir, two of which through Mammona, the other through Wielki Szlem.

Ofir 'Bred by Janów Podlaski. Imp. from Poland to Russia 1939; Race Record: 1/5 (2-1-2)PASB 573 RASB 68. Possibly the single most important sire of the 20th Century. His three most famous sons were Witraz, Wielki Szlem and *Witez II. Sire of Tersk Foundation mare Mammona. Ofir\'s 1st foal crop included Witraz, Witez II, Wielki Szlem, Wilga, & Wierna.'

*Why has *Menes proven to be such an influential breeding stallion?

Could this be through his hugely successful offspring, especially his son Balaton who also sired Kubinec?

We are looking to cover Grace (JA AmazingGgrace) next year and have several stallions in mind. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Her last foal was by Ansata Qasim. She was exceptional at birth and will we hope come into her own once she is properly grey.

I remember Grace when Wendy Marr owned her and she IS amazing! my suggestion would be you need to stick to SE's to have her fill her full potential, and if you want to know my choice of stallion e mail me and I can tell you, other wise it will be seen as advertising and not really fair ( by the way its not my stallion for anyone who thinks it might be)

I have cheated and looked on allbreedspedigree, so Hami (through Ofir) looks to be influential, after seeing his photo. He appears very similar to Menes in structure????
