I ride my gelding in a rugby pelham and i thought i was correct by attatching a slip head to the loose ring of the bit. I have since been told that it would be far more appealing for ridden showing to use a small showing pelham as it doesn't look as bulky.
so at the moment there is the original cheekpiece, the noseband cheekpiece and the cheekpiece (slip head) running up his head. i agree that it does look a little bulky but wouldn't the same apply with a normal pelham?
or would you just have a rein coming off the larger ring? and not attatch any slip head onto it.so when you look from the side you just have the cheekpiece attatched to the top part and a noseband cheekpiece.

Show pelhams and normal pelhams do not need a slip head - just your bog standard cheek pieces.
Rugby pelhams are very bulky and don't really add to the picture in a positive way[( Show pelhams look much neater - they only cost around £25, so not to bad on the purse stings either! |

Lots of people use rugby pelhams for showing instead of a double bridle as they have a single, jointed snaffle in the mouth so appear like the 'real' thing and are useful for horses that don't like a huge mouthful of iron with two separate bits! They need a bradoon which I think is what you mean by a slip head (?) which, on the double bridle goes on the snaffle bit (and therefore the big round bit rings of the rugby pelham), as does your snaffle rein. Your cheek pieces, leading to the crown piece, go on the normal holes and your bradoon and noseband (which should both be narrow leather) should fit side by side as a single 'layer' of leather - rather than bulkily on top of each other - under the crown piece. The curb rein goes on curb rings at the bottom of the rugby pelham. Hope that makes sense. A picture would be easier to understand...

Hiya,
I use a pelham on my boy, and just use the standard cheek peices (no slip head) attached to the top ring, and then use 2 reins with the bit.
I have tried a true double bridle with 2 bits, but he didn't seem happy in that, I did try various pelhams, and unfortunately for my wallet, the one he likes is the KK Ultra.
Hope that helps
