Would you be interested in being part of a new regional group in the East Midlands? LEMAHS has now become the Lincolnshire Arab Enthusiasts leaving Notts and surrounding areas without a regional group for shows, dressage, pleasure rides, jumping etc. Would you like to be part of a new affiliated group? Let us know here.

I would join, Im in Derbyshire.North staffs used to include Derbyshire, used to be on the committee. Its about time a new group appeared, good luck although I dont think you will need it, most important ingredient is "the members" .I will say this ,Being an enthusiasts group is a much better idea for your own protection as a group. my email address is Acornarabians@aol.com

Good luck with your new group but I advise you to proceed with caution if you have any intention of affiliating to the AHS.
If you get Arabian Link please read the article I wrote earlier in the year on affiliated status. It is a sad fact of life that not one single official from the AHS came forward to publicly denounce what I was saying, but that I had private phone calls from quite a few, no names, congratulating me on bringing the issue to light.
No matter what you are told, verbally or in writing, your funds raised as an affiliated group BELONG to the AHS. They can only be used for the charitable objectives of the AHS. They cannot be 'ring fenced' as YOUR funds if the main body of the AHS is in financial strife, they can and by law must be used to honour main AHS commitments.
If, once affiliated your group wish to leave, it is claimed that your funds can be 'granted' back to your group. Again grants of this nature are only legal to fulfil a charitable objective which the AHS subscribes to i.e. welfare and education. There is NO GAURANTEE That you will get your funds back.
Your committee would be liable for mis-spending "charity" money.
Please do not leap into the dark on this one. The regional groups are the backbone of the society, but there is another way.
If regional groups got their act together, we could form an independent federation of regional groups, where we are not tied to the AHS but are associated to it, as a federation an independent sister organisation where each group maintained its individual integritty and independence.
United we stand, but once affiliated to the AHS if it falls we fall with it. And just how healthy do you think its finances are. Existing regional groups have chosen NOT to affiliate, after much debate within their committees.
I have worked on a regional committee for about ten years now, doing almost every job from memberships, social visits, show organiser etc. Please do not jump in with a blindfold on.
If you hav not seen the article in the Link I can email it to you

Glad you posted this Pat, it was what I was eluding to. Thats why the Lincs group have become enthusiasts as opposed to regional group.Monmoth and Borders have also.

Hi Helen,
North Wales region had much debate and are now just keeping its satus quo, not affiliating as so far the AHS has failed to come up with ANY benefits of being affiliated.
Where is Nick when you need him, he is now in a position to ask the awkward questions, wonder if he'll get a staight answer. |

Yes Nick has my sympathies, I have my suspicions, (hearing 'between the lines' of what different people have said) that not all the previous committee were fully informed of all the goings on, so he will find it an uphill stuggle.
It is good that people have the drive and enthusiasm to try and start new groups, ours was on the verge of folding about 10 years ago when I became involved, when an EGM brought new volunteers forward and we have gone from strength to strength.
Our next project under discussion is the development of a group web site, which will open it up to a wider audience. We do the usual things, newsletters, 2 shows, stud visits, showing clinics, sales list, and purely social events.
We are told often that we are a friendly group, so if anyone would like more info or advice on what we have found works for us, please get in touch. We are distanced from the politics of the AHS and just do things so that we can better enjoy our horses. We even have several 'retired' members who no longer have any horses of their own ,and are still valued members, supporting many of our events.
About 30 of us have just enjoyed a week end away on stud visits to Georgian Arabians and Combe Farm, Sue Pyke has been elected into looking into a possible Paris trip by the process of anyone not volunteering taking one step back! Seriously, we do work well together, and the basic committee is willing to have ad hoc members. I think the buzz word for success is "inclusion".
Good luck once again. |

Thanks for your replies. Once we have a list of potential members, we will have to get together or communicate somehow, to discuss how best to proceed! The East Midlands needs an Arabian/PBA group of some sort as the Lincs events are a distance away for many. I hope that many of the old LEMAHS committee and members will join us again. We cannot join with Fenland and anyway this creates the same geographical problem as LEMAHS had (not mentioning the other problems!).
