Hi Guys,
I am taking my girls to my first ever show on Saturday, and I am making a list of things to take. Ive got the obvious things like haynets, water buckets, brushes, show halters, vaseline, baby oil, highlighter etc, etc, but I am asking you guys for the less obvious stuff that a complete novice like me wouldnt think of, but you professionals wouldnt leave home without!!
Thank you in advance, A very nervous Kate!!

Not a proffesional but............
A cannister of water, if your like me I remembered the bucket and forgot the water Sugar beet soup in case it's hot and she won't drink ordinary water. A small bucket of hard feed. Wet wipes, great for your hands after applying all that show gloss. Gloves, don't want reins or lead to slip. Rubish sack and a small shovel for poo. Shampoo, sponge and clean towel for last minute stains. Boot lace or string for your number, it's not always provided. Spare headcollar and lead rope, lunge lines. Even the best loader has off days.
And last but not least don't forget your sence of humour, VERY important |

I have a show checklist that I used to print out when I first was showing and was sure I'd forget things. It has all sorts like the wretched flu/tet and passport stuff, as well as crops, hairnet, hoof oil, fly repellent etc. If you'd like a copy please drop your email address on here and I'll send you it - it's easily printable in Word... As Lynn says, try to enjoy it all in spite of the nerves. It's such fun!! |

Thanks guys!!
Im getting more nervous by the minute!!
I have booked the two stables, not overnight, just for when we are hanging about - Passions class is 9am and Georgina's is after lunch. How much shavings would you recomend? Just a sprinkling to be widdled on? They are not staying overnight - so shouldnt need a big pile to lay down in! Is there not a muckheap? Do I need to bring that home with me? Should there be water there, or should I bring my own?
Rafa - yes, unfortunately I have that filthy habit - and I WONT be forgetting those!!
Now do I decide on waders and brolly or suncream?????
I will definately double up on headcollars, ropes etc.
I have just heard on the Welsh news that Manchester United are playing in the Millenium Stadium, so anybody coming to the show from over the bridge I recomend you leave a little earlier, I will try to find out more and let you guys know.
Thanks guys, and keep them coming!!
Now, does anyone know where I can get Valium???!!!
Good luck to all that are going!
Love Kate |

Do the stables already have bedding left in from previous occupant, I know u cant bring straw, but if u bring 2-3 bales shavings (even that is mean for overnight) I will have to spend hours shovelling it back into bin bags, I'm not spending another £20 quid and leaving it on the floor. Weather wise I looked at long range forecast and as usual it says "colder than expected, breezy, and changeable" !! well that covers everything from hurricane to heatwave. I shall be sleeping in my trailer, what joy! Heather mcbx Oh what is highlighter ?? |

Oh Heather, why are we going this????!!!! So far its cost me a fortune, and its worrying me to death!
I bought some highlighter from EBay. Tried it out last night! The texture is a bit like vaseline, but it has SPF15. It works much the same as vaseline I think. Put it around the eyes and on the muzzle for definition and shine.

Heather, do yourself a favour, take one bale of shavings. If there is no bed left in the boxes (which there more than likely will be) then the boxes will probably be on grass anyway..... i have not been Wales and West before and can't remember where the stables are etc but 3 bales is sure to be a waste. Maybe someone else on here can confirm about the stables.

Its the juniors in the morning (yearlings, 2 year olds and 3 year olds) and then the seniors in the afternoon. (Barren mares, mares & foals, geldings, stallions - in that order). Ridden going on all day. Not sure of their class schedules.
Heather, I think I will start to relax and start to enjoy it once I get home safely afterwards!!!

Hi,
The stables are permanent, but they usually have shavings left in from previous shows, but you may want to put clean shavings in,
The highlighter is what you put around the eyes and muzzle, You can buy a tub from most stalls and will last a very long time,
HEATHER, Dont worry about ALI we will get him ready for you, we will have everything with us, just bath him and bring his bridle, hay, feed, feed bowl, and water buckets, (and your camera)
see you Friday,
we are staying on the show ground too, dont worry I will come and find you and get your stable sorted. Just enjoy yourself I forgot to mention the Wine! Love Linda & Michelle

Hi Kate
There are plenty of taps there at the stables so don't worry about that but sugar beet juice is a good idea if they won't drink. You may want to take some shavings with you and there should be a place to deposit any muck. I did hear a story about the people going to an endurance ride. They loaded the horse into the trailer and set off. When they arrived at the venue they found that they had forgotten to hitch up the trailer to the truck. When they returned to their yard the horse was happily munching hay in the trailer.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Celia
p.s thanks for the photos. |

Thanks Linda, I bathed him today cos the rest of the week looks colder, he was very good but cos of the polo trick he thought every time I went to scrub his knees he had to knee me in the face. I have a bruised eye, a very nearly broken nose and a lump on my chin but he is very clean... at the moment! If anyone notices my facial damage please dont think I am a victim of domestic violence. Thanks Michelle, I wasn't sure how I was going to fit the 10 tons of stuff in the back of my landrover! I will bring 2 bales just incase. I have got one of those zip up hood things and he is happy to wear it but I am too scared to leave it on him all night incase of incidents. Do all u lot leave them on or just the night before show or what? Thanks for all help and advice, gratefully recieved!!!! Heather mcbxx and Ali |

Well it could only happen to me!!! My filly decided (in her infinite wisdom) to have a funny five minutes in her stable yesterday evening. She tripped, lost her footing, landed on the tiny bit of concrete at the front of the stable, where she slipped and landed head first squashed up against the door. She managed to get herself straight up, looking very dazed. Although she didnt knock herself out, it took her about 5 minutes to come round fully (she gave her head one heck of a bash). She has grazed her knee and coronet band, and I think she may have bitten her tongue or cheek as there was a little bit of blood around her lips.
After a few minutes of standing in the middle of her stable shaking, she decided she was alright and went back to her food!
It was a very scary thing to have happened, and could have been a lot worse, as when she landed against the door her neck was twisted around and her head was behind her back. My heart was in my mouth as you can imagine. It all happened so fast, I dont even know what set her off.
I stayed with her for over an hour last night and she was fine. I also thought she may have been a bit stiff this morning, but she was whizzing round the field with her tail over her back so I dont think she has caused herself any major damage, apart from a few scratches and a bruised ego!
Fingers crossed between now and Saturday that both my girls can keep themselves in one piece!
Heather - I have the bathing pleasure tomorrow x 2!!! I have a fleece hoody for my filly (more to keep her warm than clean) she seems ok with it on all night. Hope your face is better soon!
Celia - glad you liked the photos - Ben has done wonders with both my girls. The man is a genius!!!
See you all Saturday. (If I survive until then - my nerves cant take much more of this!!)
