Don't know if anybody else has ever come across this but i never have! My mare foaled late Friday night all was well foal doing everything he should mare ditto. stayed in Saturday turned out Sunday all fine 10pm Sunday. Early Monday we go out to stables to find foal with bloody diarrhoea not just a bit of blood but neat blood. vet called we proceeded to drip him and get lots of probiotics anti biotics etc down him. The very peculiar thing that the vet and i couldn't get over was how well in himself he was bouncing about, temperature normal. Today the blood has cleared but the diarrhoea is still like water. Although he had 2 drips yesterday lectade seems to be keeping him hydrated today, he's on a/b's, probiotics, gastrogaurd, lectade, diarsonyl, pro kaolin and live yoghurt because the obvious worry is gut damage but why? He is our 5th foal this year no probs with the rest. I know sometimes you get a runny one on a foaling heat but this isn't one. Its very bazare although the stable makes a fine 2nd home!!! He has never stopped drinking through all off this and is so bright and happy. His bloods showed his protein levels had dropped quite a lot toady from yesterday so we might be doing a plasma transfusion tomorrow. Have a fab vet but we are all a bit baffled. and he is being such a star he lays quietly for his drip he lets us put all these horrid concoctions (almost hourly) in a feeder syringe down him and never argues, and still comes for his cuddles. He's a very speacil little lad so please cros figers and toes for him.

Poor you.......foals are such a worry in those early days. Will keep everything crossed in the hope that he will soon be completely better.
The good news is that he remains bright and suckling. They are tough little characters these foals.
Get well vibes and hugs sending your way

Hope all goes well with your boy. I have no experience of having foals but can imagine this is perplexing. Good luck; he sounds a lovely, good natured chap...

I know you have him on all 'binders' already - charcoal powder and pink powder combined and syringed is very good...(12g Pink & 24'ish charcoal) Have they suggested Colitis??
Wishing you well and the wee man! |

Just keep your strength up I know how emotionally draining it can be when you can't eat sleep or stop thinking if anything else can be done and you want to know exactly what your dealing with , just sounds to me your doing everything possible right now and your little chap knows his in safe and loving hands |

Aw - poor mite, hope you're all coping with the nursing etc Was your mare on any drugs prior to foaling? I know painkillers and some wormers can casue ulcers that are dreadful in foals...? |

Oh poor little lad and he sounds such a poppet, it must be a terrible worry for you, I am keeping everything crossed and will pray that he is okay and gets over whatever it is, I have never known anything like this either and had hundreds of foals over the years, big hugs to you through this nerve racking time and bestest wishes for the boy x |

Hi news toady his blood levels are unchanged which is good so we are holding off the plasma transfusion at the moment. He went out in the field last night and cantered 2 circuits with mum in tow!! He should actually be much sicker in himself than he is but he's such a fighter. The mare had no drugs prior to delivery so can't be that but we are running a few bloods on her too. There is one funny side i've been worrying so much about him i only picked 1 child up from school last night!!!!!!111 Got my nights muddled up and thought the other 2 had clubs, got to the end of our lane, mobile rang child had used a pj=hone from another mum at school to ask why him and his sister hadn't been picked up. Made me smile for a minute |
