Oh no, praying for them too, just switched on the news. We landed home yesterday after a long flight. I always have a talk to my maker before boarding, the older i get the worst i feel. I used to fly for a living too.
Its not sounding good for them all, those poor people. |

"An Air France plane carrying 228 people from Brazil to France has vanished over the Atlantic after a possible lightning strike, airline officials say.
The Airbus sent an automatic message at 0214 GMT, four hours after leaving Rio de Janeiro, reporting a short circuit as it flew through strong turbulence.
It was well over the ocean when it was lost, making Brazilian and French search planes' task more difficult"

Oh my lord. This is tragic. Friends were on the same flight last week, also done this flight myself.
Cant even begin to imagine whats happened and how relatives are coping.
Last weekend in Austria we had a 3 hour delay due to plane having to be diverted after being struck by lightening. To my horror they put us on the exact same plane and sat us on the runway til the storm in front had cleared. After 90 min on the tarmac I asked to get off the plane, anxiety was setting in. They said sorry, its impossible as we could miss our take off slot. I was seriously uncomfortable, as were many people. 3hours delay, 2 hours on tarmac and not even a glass of water offered, it was 32 degrees outside!
In the end this was unimportant just annoying and frightening, so happy I had not heard of the tradedy today.
Prayers to all on that flight out there somewhere. |

Justine, that is so scary! As you know, I don't like flying at all (think we have done the Stansted - Aachen trip together) and things like this just fill me with horror. I know the route from Brazil to Europe is known for being bumpy but for the plane to just drop from the sky is unthinkable.
So sad for all the people and their anxious familes. |

I really feel for everyone on this flight and all their families. I also have a terrible fear of flying and news like this really s**ts me up. Doesn't make me feel any better about flying to Canada next month. Already got seditives from the doctor to take prior to boarding the plane and every 3hrs after.

| It is dreadful and my heart goes out to their families, but how often does it happen? I know that wont make anyone feel any better, but more people are killed on the roads everyday, yet we all still get in our cars every day. |

I know what you mean Michelle , but it is still SO rare that you have more chances of winning the lottery . it is fear that makes you think like this, and it often becomes irrational fear. think of the millions and millions of people who fly every day! statistics in all those millions means you are more likely to be killed by a donkey! ( sorry to make light of flying , but I am just trying to help you feel better and safer. it is indeed horrible for the poor people who died in that aircraft and I pray for their families . but today, before the day is out many more people than were on that flight will die crossing the road . |

Some wreckage has been found, they need to find the flight data recorder box next,which wont be easy. God bless them all who were on board.
As Linda says flying is actually safer than driving.Being an Airline fanatic i have for the last 35 of my 39 years watched then take of and land at Heathrow and Gatwick AVIDLY, i love it, and in all that time i only saw 1 aborted landing where a 747 came in at Heathrow- something was wrong at about 50 feet,and she lifted off and went around again, personally i have flown around the world in both directions out to my sister in New Zealand and would fly tomorrow given half the chance, i believe that when your time is up in this life, its up, simple as that, and to this end i will celebrate my 40th birthday next year with total gusto!!!! |

as some of you may know my OH was a captain for BEA, then BA , then VIrgin for 30 years and before then was a fighter pilot in the RAF, he has never once in all those years encountered a situation where the passengers and aircraft where in any danger, pretty good odds Hey? |

What puzzles me though - how could it have been struck by lightning when im sure there is some sort of Conductor obn board to repel it being struck ? Bit like a conductor on a house??  |

My father was in the RAF so I grew up around planes and then I worked in Saudi and flew regularly on holidays and back to Saudi.
I have only twice ever had anything other than a perfect flight. The first was hitting clear air turbulence where the plane can just drop hundreds of feet and things are very bouncy. I was only a teenager and it never occured to me that I might be in danger despite the screams all round me. It was the most exciting flight ever, like being on a big dipper! I realise that most people would be horrified if that happened but air accidents are very rare.
The other time was when we had 3 aborted attempts at landing at Jeddah airport in Saudi before finally making it. No idea what was wrong as we weren't told. Again, being the great fatalist that I am I bekieve that when the big man in the sky rolls the dice you will go so why worry something out of your control. Flying is the safest form of travel, it is just that when the unthinkable happens (very, very rare) there are a lot more people involved (and a lot more publicity) than when people are killed in a car crash.

| Barbara ,when i left New zealand last time to come home (flying out of a cyclone type thing hovering over NZ) toward Los Angelees, blimey that was impressive turbulance that dayOur 747 was dropping hundreds of feet at odd intervals, my tea did well to stay on its lickle tray!And that was about the only time i ever felt sick on a plane,im a hopless traveller on a bus /coach or as a passenger in a car, allways feel sick!! |

Planes get hit by lightning all the time but are designed to 'shed' the charge harmlessly. Looks like on this occasion it All Went Horribly Wrong - truly bad luck... experienced, competent pilots; good plane recently undergone a thorough overhaul/service... Himself and I looked at the weather satellite images at the time and it was pretty horrible: red spots (v nasty weather) all the way.
But it's true: far more people die/are hurt on the road but because the casualities tend to come in ones and twos we don't think about it. Plus of course most of us have been in a car accident of some sort and come out of it perfectly okay and so it doesn't 'feel' so dangerous. |

Lindilou lol re' the donkey...I think more people are killed by coconuts too.
But that doesn't lessen the fear, my OH flys the same Airbus plane, day in day out- he's never had any incidents at all; aeroplanes do get hit by lightening without much harm, but this area (near the equator) has a lot of storm activity and normally the worst is avoidable. These people were very very unlucky, and appear to have got caught in a massive storm.
I fly a lot and do feel 'nerves' but I try to see the advantages of getting on a plane: seeing the world, relatives, friends etc.. I feel I'd would miss so much if I allowed my fear to stop me. The other thing is it can be very bumpy and noisy, but try not to let that alarm you as that is quite normal.
My thoughts are with the poor friends and relatives of the victims |
