Has anybody on here had much experience of splints, a horse I know had one come up last year on his fore leg through being silly in the field, he is 7 years old and never went lame, it is now set, has anybody ever experienced this, if so, has the horse ever been lame since, or when the splint has set is that it and no further problems

My mare threw a splint when she was 4. Never lame. If I remember correctly (long time ago as shes 19 now), I got a liquid to brush on the splint - but can't remember what it was? The splint totally disappeared over time. |

you can get some DMSO [l think its called] from your vet which breaks down calcium deposits...but you need to be careful when using it, ie gloves and not pregnant human and/or equine
it should break it down completely in a few weeks

that depends on where it is... l have heard they do not bother horses much unless they are close to the knee joints which in later years can cause problems
hope that helps

i have only ever had one horse throw a splint, i think her flamboyant movement caused her to knock the splint bone as she was only 3yrs when it appeared and not in any work. I bought splintex silver and painted it on as directed, with time the splint has almost dissapeared. Splintex is available online, i don`t think you can get it at ordinary tack shops. |
