Hi Guys - just wanted your opinions - and stories - about the max age you might expect a horse to do Endurance rides? (yes, I am talking about the horses and not the owners! ) I am looking to get my first horse in many years with a view to doing Endurance riding, and need something sane and sensible to re-build my confidence intially, so this inclines me towards an older horse, but I need one that will still be up for Endurance riding in a year or two, when I am ready. Not really thinking of being on the England team or anything ... but you never know!  Susie

It really does depend on the horse . I know of a horse over 25 which still does 20 miles rides [32km],but that, for him, is an easing off.
In the past there have been a number of 18 and 19 year olds completing the Golden Horse shoe successfully. |

| I was hoping to do some rides this year with my mare, she's 17 in June and this would have been our first season of doing endurance, only pleasure rides or 32km novice CRs, but she's had a bad cough for about a month now so I don't know if we're going to get to any rides after all!! |

My mare is 17 this year we have just got our 2nd STQ (64km ride) i only started her in endurance in 2004 when she was 12, she not been doing much as she injured herself in 2006, only did a couple of rides last year with her. hoping to do an 80km with her this season.

| Komandor has just got a Grade 2 in the 32km at Southdowns (rider Sophie Knox) and he is 23. |

This 50+ rider is definatly struggling, but I started an unridden mare under saddle then endurance at 16, was brilliant at grade 1's, did 2 good years on her, retired her sound. (She became too wide as my hips went downhill) 
I know one who competed into his 20's so age is really not a facter if fit, sound and able. |
