You see it along the side of the abdomen and it is associated with the effort of breathing out when a horse has respiratory problems (COPD/ROA - can't quite think what the 'new'term for COPD is.) Our cob has breathing difficulties in the summer only but his heave line is always visible to some extent and the vet says it will never go now. He is fit and in work for most of the year and has inhalers over the summer, so a horse with a heave line may well be capable of working, but it would indicate some underlying problem.
