Like every horse I know, Kharidian loves apples and carrots and these are his main treats and "thank-yous".....however as soon as he is in a trailer or is away from home, whether at a show, a Pleasure Ride, or indeed just having boxed out somewhere for a hack somewhere different he will not eat either treat! In fact he opens his mouth to take one then stops - as though it makes him feel ill. He will, however, eat bread, chocolate biscuits, flapjacks etc and particularly likes eating tea-bags and slurping my tea/coffee and will always graze or eat a haynet.
I assume it's a "nerves" thing - he is perfect to load and unload single-handed (travels brilliantly, never sweats, sometimes doesn't even dung in the trailer) and loves doing Pleasure rides and hacking somewhere different so I can only assume it's an excitement "ooh what's going on now?" response. Once he is home and has grazed/eaten a meal he'll eat carrots and apples again.
Does anyone else's horse have dietary foibles like this?

Ah - at least you know him and his ways. My big partbred likes to come off the trailer and have a wee so we always make sure there's time for that as he's not keen on goping once a rider on |

My instructor says her warmblood will only eat liquorice (for clicker training) when competing. Nothing else will persuade him to consider a treat, for when he has finished.
Unfortunately not an option for my girrl as the smell of liqorice/aniseed make me want to hurl |

My first horse was the same - she wouldn't take any sort of normal horse treat when she'd been boxed somewhere, but she'd steal bacon sandwiches from my Dad (I'm vegetarian, she also liked my cheese sandwiches)!
The rest of mine will eat anything, anywhere. |

Yes, Marygold is similar. She'll usually bite your hand off for either carrots, apples or Hilton's Herballs (she doesn't really bite - far too polite for that), but she's very half-hearted about them when I offer them as a reward for loading. And she's another one who loads herself and travels like a dream.
I think she DOES find travelling slightly stressful, and it's probably for that reason. |

Interesting responses, thank you! It's good to know he's not the only one - and I love the variety of treats that are demanded!

A pony I used to ride would absoultly refuse to load to come home from a show if he hadn't had an ice cream and he would only eat the proper scoopy ones, no Mr Whippys for him! Once he even got loose from the sode of the lorry and took off across the showground and stuck his head into the ice cream van, much to the surprise of the man in there! He would eat the whole thing, cone as well in one bite |
