Baz has taken a battering during the day, don't know what has happened but looks like he has been cornerd panicked and jumped the filed fence, not cleared the top rail but crashed and snapped that, he has a few scratches but is sore, going to be real stiff in the morning, is arnica the best thing, one of the elders told me not to give bute tonight in case it masks something?....typical it was his last day out with the heard naked! before we knuckle down for show prep. Vet is coming Friday anyway if he still looks sore

I think arnica is fantastic. You can either give the pillules straight into the mouth or in a nick of a carrot or apple - they are sweet so typically will be liked, the thing is you are not supposed to touch them. Don't know why. ?????
I also have arnica cream that you can apply directly on bruises but haven't used on a horse. When my daughter shut her fingers in the hinge side of the door I smothered her hand in arnica then put a tissue over it and put a glove on and kept applying throughout the day. The next day you wouldn't have known she had had an accident. I also always carry the pillules for instances where I might fall off. I know when Eba got badly kicked I gave her arnica and I think that made a huge difference.
It doesn't mask any pain though which is I guess what you would use bute for. It just helps the healing process.
Does that help? B

Arnica is a very good thing to use.
If the vet is not comimg until Friday there is no reason not to give him a bute it will not cover up anything. I would give him 2 tonight just to make him comfortable.
Also why is the vet not coming until Friday thats nearly a week away.

My filly did exactly the same thing on Christmas Day! I,too, am concerned the vet isn't coming until Friday. Fast treatment is important. Intravenous bute is probably what the vet will give him but in the meantime I would hose the leg for 15mins twice a day. You need to guard against the inflammation and swelling that may take a very long time to go down. You wouldn't break one of those rails with a hammer would you? Think of the impact on his leg. I used arnica gel (after hosing)until I finished the pot and then Radiol, anything people recommended to me in fact. My filly still has a slight lump but it's a lot better than a broken leg so I suppose I should be thankful! Incidently, she was never lame. |

Hi Zerena and Pauline..didn't mean to worry you, the vet is coming on Friday for his teeth to be done.what i meant was if he was still sore i would get the vet to have a look whilst he was here. The spill sounds worse then what it is he is a very very lucky horse, he was sound this morning and sound tonight with no heat or odd lumps, phew! But i will be keeping an eye on everything.I use Naf arnica witch hazel gel too, love it |
