Hi as most of you know i own a Mareschal Mare called Alliya and she is due her first foal at the age of 10years in 9and a half weeks. She has looked fantastic all the way through her preg, but in the last month she being a strange it just started with her just being a little to full of her self coming in at night and she was a little sharp in the stable which was fine, then last week she rubbed all the top of her tail out over night which she has never done and trashed the stable. Friday i noticed her showing to the geldings in the next field, last night and today she is leaking from both sides of her udder she is not bagged up or hot under there but she is getting drips on her legs and if i clean under there as it is a favorite scratchy places i get it on my hand. Foal is moving really well lots of activity at feed time and after drinking and she has no discharge at all.
I hope you all do not mind me asking about what you think about all this i just need a little input regarding Alliya or if you have a mare who does the same i never had this with Alliya,s dam

It is strange, but they do show almost season like behaviour and flirt quiet outragiously towards the end of their pregnancy, this is nothing to worry about , just a change in hormones and quiet normal, I am surprised she is leaking from her udder though, as she still has a fair way to go, but if it is clear and sticky I shouldnt worry too much, all in all I think she is jus getting ready for the big day, but watch her closely for any other changes, keep us informed , how exciting |

Thank you Lyndilou i put the false season to the lovely weather a few day's ago and but the leaking was concerning me a little as it is her 1st and she has still got a long time to go but she looks fab and is so full of the joys of spring I will be keeping a really close eye on her as well as the other people on the yard i will let you know if anything changes |

Hi Susan, I'm no expert having only ever bred a couple of foals, but I did notice you said on another thread that the leaking was when you were cleaning the 'mucky bits' off her udder. I think this may well have something to do with the leakage and although I can understand you wanting her to be clean in this department I would personally avoid poking her udder about too much. Incidently one of mine appeared to 'show' to the boys when in foal even though she's not particularly flirty normally. |

Yes that is when i first noticed it but i have stopped and it was the first time in about 4 weeks since i have cleaned her underneath but she is leaking as she walks about in general and she looked liked it had been going on before she came in last night as it was down the front of her hind legs and was partly covered in dust |

If I were you when she comes in tonightI would squeeze her teat a little and see what the colour is, if it is clear and feels sticky then leave her alone from now on,and stop worrying , if it comes out cloudy or watery milky then she could well be close, so needs a close eye kept on her. also dont worry if her teats are not clean, babies wont mind a little bit of dirt |

Hi......check your mares bag regularly, if she is leaking fluid, she is certainly getting nearer her time
When the fluid turns a weak milky colour.......she could foal within 24 hours Good luck

Thank you all i feel better now i have shared it with all of you, i am going to recheck her dates today but i think they will not be far off as i quickly checked them 2 weeks ago and found i had made her 2 weeks later than she was but she was only covered once which was the 5th day of that season as was not interested on the 3rd and 4th days
Thankyou Susan and Alliya

Hi Kathleen, What was the actual date your mare was covered?? The pregnancy has to be 300 days for a viable foal (born before 300 days gestation) the foals lungs are not sufficiently formed to sustain life We have had one or two foals at 305 and 307 days gestation and both were OK

Alliya was covered on 28th June and so I would not expect her to foal until around 7th June 2009. She could, of course, go 1 week either way perfectly safely. My calculator says from the 17th May to 5th June being the most likely period. A long time since I have looked that up in my Small Breeder Handbook - it has one of those Automatic Almanac at the back. I would not expect her to be leaking anything as yet so it is interesting that some of you have experienced that and can advise Susan. I can't say that I have ever had that except one mare that foaled nearly a month early and had twins - who both survived. Di Ellis |
