Hiya All,
I've been keeping the foals in stables next door to mums at night-they can easily see each other, touch noses in the stables. I have been doing this for nearly 3 months now.
The other week, i went to start weaning them during the day, by them going out in seperate fields(next door to each other) i've done it like this before and had no problems, they have already been going out with their nanny's too, so had older company to look after them. So i took the one filly out in the field with the nannies, turned her loose, she seemed o.k as she can easily see mum, so went to get the other filly, a very short walk away as field is in front of stables. Heard a noise and the filly had tried to jump the 5 bar gate, didn't quite clear it, got her legs stuck, pulled the gate off it's hinges and luckily was free with no harm done at all, phew. This filly is a bit of a mummies girl, mum isn't particulary fed up with her either yet.
Anyway i'm a bit perplexed as what to do now. Certianly don't want the filly to do anything stupid.
Any ideas?
Cheers Nikki

You really need to have Mums out of sight or hearing for a while. Alternatively, have someone help you turn out both foals together and perhaps stay by the gate for a while to make sure they are settled together with the Nannies.
If necessary, shut Mares top doors for a while, if you cant get them out of sight.

Load up mares and travel them to grazing totally away from the yard - assumes you have somewhere for them to go. And may have to grille the foalies in as you leave! Foalies will settle soon enough and can be turned out together with 'nanny'. Way too big and strong now to carry on as you were - someone will get hurt. |

we always take mum away , so neither can hear or see each other, seems harder but much less accidents happen this way, the little ones soon learn from each other and their new nannies.

hiya thanks!
hiya donna, no same field as they always go in.
I've tried looking for grazing, but can not find anything, apart a field with terrible fencing and other horses in it, and i don't fancy my mares being kicked or kicking others.
I've had some good ideas from becky, fingers xcd it may work better. |

My mare has lived with her son from birth and they are still together now nearly 3 years later they do get on well |
My horse is my very best friend. Nothing in the world can separate us. When he dies I know he'll be waiting for me at the gate... just like always.
