Unfortunately our trials at Guisburn continue, tonight we lost Shimshas' daughter by Crusader - Guisburn Shazehra. Shazehra was heavily pregant to Hussain (Crusader/Heloua) due 6th July.
She was a bit off last night and not in her usual place in the queue. After everyone else was in, her 2008 filly arrived with mum walking slowly behind. No kicks or injuries, seemed lethagic, slightly colicy, put the filly away and took mum to her box - took out her feed and hay, gave two sachets of bute in a syringe with honey took her for a walk and kept an eye on her. At 11.35pm she had passed some bowel movement and seemed perky so I thought it was safe to go to bed. This morning at 6am I found that she had been rolling - she was filthy with manure. I called the Veterinary practice, who were concerned enough to want her at the surgery to monitor. They kindly ordered transport (as our wagon was being serviced!!!)
Graham Russ the senior vet thought there could be a blockage or rotation of the intestine blocked by the uterus. The foal was still alive, but was becoming sluggish, and the mare was becoming distressed in regular cycles, followed by periods of calm exhaustion. The only way to confirm the theory would have involved major surgery, which is risky without a pregnancy....at 6pm tonight Shazehra was put to sleep - I wonder what next!

I am so sorry. RIP Shazehra. Very sad about the foal I saw this happen with Luda who actually had a stroke and died with only 4 weeks to go but the foal died as well. Will be thinking of you all. |

Melanie and Nick, I can't say how upset we are to hear this. You really don't deserve all this crap! We are so, so very sorry to hear of this sudden shock loss of a truly lovely mare (as you know, we would have taken her away with us the minute your back was turned if she would only have fitted in Sarah's Micra!!!)
Thinking of you both at this awful time - lots of love
