I am so proud of Eba. She wore her bridle for the first time today with no fuss, no hassle, no arguement, nothing. I wouldn't have really expected any different, but I knew the YO had expected a fight. I was told to take her to the inside area so that she couldn't escape etc etc.

I did take her inside, and after about 30 seconds of asking she just opened her mouth and in went the bit and then she had it on for about 30 minutes and just played with the keys on the ring inside and just was not at all fussed. We had a wander up and down the road and round the industrial units round the back of the yard with no fuss. She didnn't fuss to eat grass, and was just cool and groovy. (I did put a little bit of honey on it too which I guess helped)

I am delighted as it was a real spur of the minute thing to do it. I was going to have a dentist come out to her today who had to cancel at the last minute. While rearranging I wanted to know what I could do to help her be ok with him when he comes as she hasn't had anyone look at her teeth before, and he asked if she had had a bit, and that if not it would help. I found out the old bridle someone gifted me last year, and then phoned the local saddlery, tp see if they had a bit they thought would fit. They did, I went and got it and then bob's your uncle, it all happened.

V happy person.

Well done to you both!

I am very jealous - bitting is the one thing I've tried with Jack and then backed off I ride in a rope halter, but that's not the point, I want him to be happy in a bit just in case.

He doesn't really want it in there, even covered in molasses, but that's not the problem, it will go in eventually. He's not even too bothered when it's in.

It's when I come to take it out, he usually manages to clamp his teeth down on it and then panics.

I've tried starting with a rope, and teaching 'open', but he doesn't 'open' very far and still clamps - obviously doesn't worry then as it's only a rope.

Any suggestions gratefully received! Sorry to hijack your thread, I'm just bitter

Well Eba was a very good girl and put her bridle straight back on again this morning and already seems to have the idea that you can eat while out on a walk in a headcollar, but a bridle is different. She was certainly stepping out.

Kelly - been thinking about your problems. Can Jack open his mouth widely enough normally? If not could be a tightness or something with TMJ or hyoid bone which attaches to the fascia that runs down over the muscles right down the throat and on to the chest.

Could the bit be catching a tooth or the tongue on the way out?

Could it be the movement of the bridle off that causes the panic. I ride a stallion who doesn't like movement out of the corner of his eye - I think anyway. His owner says he is headshy, but I haven't found any problems there. he seems to react to his lead rope tied in front of him, like he doesn't see it and then it startles him. Could it be anything like this with the throatlash?

I don't have a nose band on Eba, I don't know if that makes any difference.

What bit are you using? How thick is it? Wondering if it is a snaffle whether it is doubling up on the way out? Another thought, if he is ok with a rope could you thread something on it - thin pipe or pasta to make it stiffer and slowly build it up?

Does it make any difference how long it is in? By that I mean can you put it in and take it straight out without a problem and then build up the time?

I am sure you have been through all this, so just thoughts.
