My mare was moved to a new yard on Sunday. She seems to be settling well and has come into season big style as she is now mixing with the lads.
Judging by the marks on her rug one of them has been mounting her. Should this be a worry or just a normal occurance? She seems ok in herself.

Some geldings will mount heavily in season mares, they usually don't actually draw but just go through the motions, its not anything ordinarily to worry about but if the boys are wearing shoes she may get cut or grazed once her rugs come off.

I'm hoping that once they all go out into 20 acres of field they will be too interested in eating and leave her alone.

One of the geldings at the stud I was at used to 'cover' mares - though he was shooting blanks of course.

I'd also be a bit concerned about the shoes or constant strain on her back if they're heavy boys!

There was a TB gelding at a yard I used to keep my mare out that was a bit riggy and he would 'cover' her when she was in season. When I saw them 'at it' I shouted at him to get down as he was about 16.3hh and she's 14.2hh!!! She didn't seem to care though, big tart that she is!!

Luckily they are all smaler ponies that she is in with so whichever the culprit is he wont be too heavy. Im more worried about the shoe marks. Her rug will have to stay on for now.

Well when I got to the yard yesterday her stable rug is in tatters down both sides!
Neither of the geldings in with her are shod so christ knows how the rips are happening. Are unshod hooves that sharp? Would she be better with no rug at all so that she would go "ouch get off!" or with a turnout rug that is more robust?
