Oh what a night!! Got to the yard around 6ish to find friend's horse heavily sedated after having swallowed a Bramble - he was frothing at the mouth and struggling to breathe - vet had to stick his hand down his throat to remove it and when I arrived he was looking very sorry for himself!
So I was chatting to the owner's husband assuring him I would keep my eye on him and giving him cuddles (he is a gorgeous WB Show Jumper out of Burgraff and oh such a sweetheart) when OMG!!! Mum brings a very hobbling lame Pasha in to the yard....
To our complete horror, he was lame on his GOOD FOOT . He couldn't put any weight on it and was holding it up in the air!!
Well you can imagine, both Mum and I were in bits! I called our vet straight away and thank goodness he was the duty vet on call and only 20 mins away! He came straight out!
Soo after some investigation, vet declares it is an abscess on the inside wall of the hoof, removes the shoe and yippee we see some glistening under pressure of hoof testers and vet can 'hear it' (apparently they squeak and hiss a bit)!! PHEW!!
Given the fact that poor little Pasha has really been through the mill recently and is only just getting over his laminitis/cushings attack, he didn't want to dig around too much, so gave him a lovely non-steroid pain killer to make him comfortable and is coming back this morning (in fact he should be there with mum now).
I went down to muck-out etc. at 6:30 and he was a bit better on it, but still very very sore! Hopefully it will drain quickly without too much damage to the foot and he can get back out in his field again!
Thanks for reading!
Sarah x

Thanks Goldenmane
Just had a call from Mum - vet has been this morning and is pleased with how it's progressing Mum did say he put his hands on his head and said 'oh what to do' as he really wants him out due to his stiffness and the fact his laminitis/cushings has been soo improved with turn out, but obviously he can't go out because of the abscess!!
So, he's coming back on Friday and I have to find him a 'welly boot' to wear as hopefully he can go out in the field on Friday |

Fingers crossed Pasha gets better soon, he's been through so much recently!!
We had a horse on yard a with an abcess that went all the way through from toe to top of coronet band. The poor mare was in so much pain a couple of weeks ago but she's much improved now and happily stands with her bad foot in a bucket without moving - they know it's for their best I'm sure.
Shah has joined the club for 'old horses that are just not well enough to do more than a slow walk'!! After getting him reasonably fit, 2 weeks later he's now lost all fitness and gets terribly tired after just a walk up a small hill, or a lap of canter in the school. He's yawning a lot (is this normal for old horses??) and just taking things easy so I think he will really enjoy his full retirement at the end of the month... |

Hi!! His Grandaughter gets a puncture in her foot without fail every year thanks to the council insisting on putting thorny hedges around the field! She's a diamond when it comes to poulticing etc but I can't keep her booty thing on for the life of me!! when the lameness eases she's back to her high-kicking self...poultice boot goes into orbit!! How much is that one on your pic? Looks ace! Hope he feeling better now,Amiah and Whinney yawn at me when I'm not quick enough with dinner!!! |

Oh Pasha you really have my sympathy; we had a pony with Cushings and it was a complete nightmare, trying to keep the condition on him without his getting laminitis. Interestingly, he yawned a lot too. Sadly, he's no longer with us.
Thank goodness his lameness is 'only' an abscess and hopefully he'll be over it soon, but how you keep him active is another problem.
Sending healing vibes and hopefully the WB is feeling better too x |

Does he still ping fencing tape at other horses? Amiah and Whinney (Dubya!)know the minute it's off and lean over it,or gets head under the springy gates and they go over her back and the little urchin is through to graasy delights!!Mind you W was doing that with it ON! Even tied plastic bags on but that was no deterant!!!
Forgot to say thanks for boot info!! |

Oh no, Pasha NEVER leaves his field or tries to escape Even when (at his old yard) another horse managed to open the gate and all the horses were out on the lane, Pasha stayed in his field all on his own! He tries to be good
He does however like to plan adventures in his field - through farm machinery in particular He is also a Houdini Extraordinaire! he can remove himself from a WB Taka High Neck without undoing any of the straps! He is also masterful at removing fly veils with full ears
At the moment though (as he's got a sick note) he can only play in the sick paddock and the only thing in there to keep him entertained are Rabbits! He likes to watch them and the sheep next door! The sheep have started lamming so hopefully he can get out to meet the new baby lambs tomorrow x |
