I've never ridden in the area before & have just got this rides schedule - Saturdays route follows the purpose -built bridleway round the reservoir then the High Peak Trail. Sundays route - through Hopton then onto the trail to Smerrill Moor & Long Dale then back via green lanes & bridleways. I'm hoping to go & poss do a 65km - so any input as to which day has the better routes, going underfoot etc - would be much appreciated
Thanks Pat & Ester! So - b'way round the water - is it hard all the way?? Or Sundays route on lots of old railway routes - whats that like underfoot?? Don't get many disused railway lines to ride on round here in mid Wales!! We did the Llyn Brianne ride a couple of weeks ago - Sly (grey in signature) abso love it & powered round!! but everyone else complained lots about the rough stoney going underfoot on the forestry roads!! Sly just floated!!
I prefer the Saturday route riding round the lake more interesting especially when your doing the 65km, you can get onthe grass in some areas and the railway is a man made surface anyway and can be very hard if not had any rain. This year hopefully going to Sabrina Valley instead like to try new rides and been going to carsington for many years. Venue is lovely as long as it stays dry, this part of derbyshire has a habbit of having at least one day of torrential rain and the farmer is very busy towing us off the venue, think we got away we it last year can't say it rained too much if at all. Good two day ride if you can manage to stay over. Enjoy
Thanks Dee Got to try & find a house sitter - my friend was going to do it - but shes now decided to go on a weeks walking holiday to Scotland! Sabrina Valley would be closer for me - there & back ina day - think its in the Wyre Forest (used to be the Worcester Way ride)?
Dee - not sure - but if its the Wyre Forest - yes forest!! But can't remember what the tracks were like as it was late 90s that I last competed there! Only remember that it was very busy with walkers & mountain bikers!!! Will phone Katherine Thornton & find out!! I was at Vyrnwy as well (40km novice on Sly grey in signature) - I've done Vyrnwy many times & always sworn I'd never go back as the mileages were always VERY doubtful!!! Anyway - yes - I agree - this years ride was BRILL - tracks were much better etc & mileage seemed to be OK!! Are you coming to Ludlow?? I'm taking Sly (50km nov) on the Saturday & perhaps Rowan(bay in signature) my 6 yr old Arab on the Sunday to try his first ever 40km nov - so could be exciting!! If not Rowan then might take my intermedaite Arab Jet (Alpha Ibn Estansa) - his endurance track record is not good!! Won the novice cup at the Red Dragon, fast tracked to Intermediate - then foot & mouth & I had a total hystetrectomy!! Next season - first ride at Delamere - 50km - got kicked badly on his shoulder by PR horse a few miles from the end - so withdrew him - took ages to get him sound - got him fit again - then he started having nosebleeds - eventually vet scoped him & found he had a mighty infection up his one nostril!! So megga antibiotics etc....so I gave up & carried on competing on my advanced horse!! Next season.... Jet - first ride 50km at the FOD...went round fast....trotted up ever so slighly lame...stone bruise L front.....took months to resolve!!!!!!!!!! That was last year..... We really should arrange to meet at theses rides we are both at
