My 1 year old collie Bobby has a really sore back end he does not want to jump up into or out of the car and finds it hard even getting up on the sofa in the kitchen.
I am putting off taking him to the vet as my brothers German Shepherd, with the same symptoms, has hip dysplasia, this is not likely in a young collie is it?

It is possible he might have hip dysplasia---there is quite a high incidence in collies these days---but it could be any number of other things---- the only way to find out is get him to a vet.It sounds like he needs painkillers/anti-inflammatories whatever the cause. If it is HD it is not the end of the world and a lot can be done these days, especially in such a young dog. I would recommend you get a referral to a specialist orthopaedic vet ( even if it isn't HD and it continues)---there is a wonderful one in Fife who gets referrals from the whole country---can pm you his details if you want.

Hi Susan,

Sounds like your dog has put some discs out in his back. Forget the vet firstly and see a chiroprator as it happened to one of mine a while back and I did the mistake of having bloods etc etc at the vet and just had a big bill. One visit to the chiro and after a few days saw tremenduous difference for a fraction of the cost. I hope it is only that, please let us know. Good luck Diane

Our red collie grew very rapidly so from 9 to 18 months he foten looked very sore and creaky. Vet's put it down to his size and suggested swimming. He's stronger now, but still cannot Spring like the others can, and cold damp days he tires himself out - have to shut him in mid afternoon or he's crocked all evening.
Try arnica and oils in his feeds too. Helped our boy

Thanks I took him to another vet this afternoon for a second opinion, they could find nothing wrong either.I hope it is just growing pains or perhaps a strain. He is such a stoic character and never shows any pain, the vet cleared his glands tonight and he was obviously bothered by that!but never made a sound I gave him some metacalm this evening, but I hate to see him looking like an old dog

I once had a collie x greyhound who as a youngster had "growing pains" which turned out to be ricketts.
He had to have calcium and vitamin d3 (I think), he did make a full recovery, and went on to be the best dog I've ever owned.

Good luck with your boy,

Find a dog food with vitamin C in it.The americans put vitamin C in their dog years ago to help prevent hip dysplasia.Vitamin C makes collagen.I have seen bowed legs in puppies straighten many times, after having a vitamin C tablet in 24 hours_48 hours.they would cry on moving or if another puppy touched them.too high a protein or an unbalanced diet will cause growing pains in some but not all breeds.Hope that will help you or anyone else.
