No wonder poor Dennis was not feeling well. The pressure from that abscess must have been immense. Just look at all the gunk that has come out.
Strangely enough, this is the third horse I have heard about lately who has had an abscess from an injection.
Wishing Dennis a speedy recovery.

Paul - when this happened to my mare, the vet said quite casually 'injection reaction'!!
It was clearly an ascess (following injection).
My current vet only injects low on the chest (between her legs) just incase it should happen, then any resulting scarring/lumps would be less disfiguring.
Vera - Dennis must be feeling better poor chap - good luck for next tuesday x |

Good lord! What a relief that must have been! An abscess is an incredible thing. The amount of pain the animal is in prior to drainage, and the amount of gunk that comes from it is immense. The the immediate relief is huge. No wonder he was lame!!! xx |

Poor You and poor Dennis. Big Hugs and Healing Vibes, sending your way. Can only hope that now the abcess is lanced and flushed out, tomorrow also, he will start to show improvement.
What an ordeal you have both been through together. Things can only get better from here, and Dennis may soon be able to enjoy the Spring Doctor Greengrass which should help his recovery and also give you relef from all the worry and stress.

OMG I was quietly sure it wouldn't be an abcess due to the sheer size of the bump, how wrong was I? The poor boy, he was soooooo brave - that must have been agony. Bless him. Give him a huge snog from me. Hopefully now he will make a swift recovery from this and you can get on with sorting his allergy and your blood out!

Mr Menace doesn't appear to be lame any more! He is however still in horsepital on intravenous antibiotics. Lots of goo is coming out of the hole which is also packed with an antibiotic dressing.
He's now on so many meds that he is being fed 4 times a day so he thinks he's in heaven. Once again he has charmed all the staff and vets who can't get over his temperament. He simply does not hold grudges despite what is being done to him. |

Vera....so pleased Dennis is more comfortable today, now that the pain has eased. Must be a very deep abcess, so may take a few days to completely drain it. He is in the best place but does sound as if he has melted the hearts of his carers.
Give him big hugs and please keep us updated with his progress keep your chin up girl. Hopefully all his problems will soon be sorted.
He certainly has got the right name has Mr. Menace

Vera..........been having a think about this one........if you remember in an early post when Dennis was rubbing his backside....I suggested he was scanned...just in case he had an internal irritation?? (mares in Labour sit hard on the walls and rub their backsides....and all along their sides to ease the pain and irritation of the birthing contractions)
From the time of the steroid injection which was only a few days, I would think he could not possibly have had such a HUGE abscess in such a short span of time!! From the pics..........I would say that the amount of puss that has exuded and is still flushing out, would lead me to believe it only coincidental...that the injection actually is the route cause of the abscess!! I am hoping I am wrong, because if this abscess has been building up all these weeks, then he really has got a very deep infection, which will need lengthy intensive treatment.
Please do keep me in touch with his progress...having experience of a similar case....and as a learning curve, am hoping that if the Severe Allergic Reaction.....is responsible....then hopefully....once the abscess is healed and the irritation ceases. All your anxiety and stress will fade....and Dennis`s SAR will disappear!!
