My mum is going into Hospital on Monday for an operation, I am very worried about her, they won't give her an anaesthetic but some sedation and an epidural so please could you include her in your prayers or send some healing thoughts, this was me with my mum last year

I will be thinking of you and your mum Gerri.
I had a small op the year before last, with general anaesthetic, and it was fine, I was in and out in 6 hours, no problems. The doctors and nurses are all so good.
Love and best wishes Kelly xx |

Thank you for your kind words Kelly, they will not give her a general because she has smoked all her life and she is 76 years old in June, it is quite a big op and if all goes alright she will be in for a week, but I cannot help worrying. |

Wishing her all the best. The thoughts of these things are usually worse than the op, it's self. |

My mum had a hip replacement with an epidural because of her age (she chose it too!) and it was fine. I'm sure your Mum will get through this well. At least she won't have that horrible 'recovery' from the general which is so uncomfortable. |

Thank you roseanne, I had never heard of someone being opened up under an epidural, I knew they sometimes did that for keyhole surgery, but not when they are opening the tummy, or like you mum a hip replacement op which is a big op also so I feel a bit better after reading your post, Thank you and thank you to the others for your kind wishes x |

Gerri, A caesarean section (major abdominal surgery) is carried out under an epidural or spinal over 90% of the time unless time is too critical to Mum or baby in which case it is quicker to do a General Anaesthetic than to site an epidural.
However an epidural is not feasible for an operation above the level of the abdomen as, in order to numb the pain sensation above the abdomen then the diaphram i.e. breathing etc would also be affected as the epidural will be sited higher in the spine.
I'd certainly request surgery under an epidural if it were feasible although I appreciate that it might be offputting to hear the operation proceeding but with light sedation your mum shouldn't get distressed.
I would imagine that your mum will still need to fast before the operation. I'm sure she'll be fine and will probably suffer less post-operative pain as the drugs used in epidurals/spinals are VERY effective; approximately half our caesarean ladies just need paracetamol and voltarol (diclofenac) post-op and never need morphine and most others only need one IM injection of morphine.
I hope all goes well for your mum. Caryn |

Epidurals are amazing.....when I was in hospital for almost three months, and it looked likely I was going to lose my leg, they operated, using an epidural Wide awake all the time and did not feel a thing!! Few years younger than your lovely Mummy and Im sure she will be fine. Healing vibes and best wishes for a speedy recovery sending her way
No after effect, as there is with anaesthetic, whatsoever

My Mum had an epidural as well for a knee operation when she was 80, it is actually safer in older people as there is less chance of chest problems caused by the anaesthetic. Here`s hoping your mum is soon back home and on the road to recovery |

Thank you everyone for your lovely messages Mumk is at my sis's now, they gave her a general in the end as said they did not realise how big it was, she had keyhole surgery which has left her with 6 little holes, she arrived back at my sis, and promptly fell asleep, but I spoke to her last night and she is fine but very very tired and told the docs she wanted to go home, anyway my sis is taking care of her, so she will be fine, I told her of your well wishes and she thought it was lovely |
