I considered using No-Bute many years ago for my first horse when his old legs got stiff as I thought that being natural i.e. from "Devil's Claw", it would be better for him than Bute.
However my vet advised me that No-Bute is actually more irritant to the stomach than Bute so I put him on therapeutic doses of Bute which he took in jam sandwiches and, believe it or not, he used to salivate like a dog when he knew I had his sandwich!
Shiloh was bought for me by my parents when I passed my o-levels in 1979. He was a coloured TBx who I owned for 26 years. He was a fantastic little horse who had been badly treated early in life (more out of ignorance than anything else) and used to get worried very easily.
As Kharidian and my cats seem to be featured quite a lot on this forum and Shiloh has never been on t'internet before, here is a picture of Shiloh which was taken a few days before he was PTS at the grand out age of 33, three and a half years ago:

Hi, One side effect of devils claw is increasing the chance of heart murmers. Hence we tend to give our oldies a maintenance dose of MSM/Glucosamine dose to maintain their creaky joints instead. T x |

Iused ButeX and they ate it!!!!!
Think it was about £16-17 a tub.
Seemed to work anyway, obviously not as good as proper bute but if your horse is arthritic better than piling them with Bute anyway.

Awwwwwwwwww Caryn, I'm glad you put a picture of Shiloh on t'internet; he's lovely. He has a very knowing look, which I guess he would have after living to that grand age. Well done to you |

hi there i can relly recommend bute x globel herbs fantastic stuff the only downside with this is if horse fussy its quite a strong smell and it does work out quite expensive compared to butless(equine america) which smells of bubble gum which i have had really good results too and works out at 19.99 for a 2 month supply if you were using daily hope this helps lehla |

Hi Mrs Vacq I was discussing these with my farrier the other day and he said apart from real bute there is no point giving a substitute he says you might as well give your horse dust. I do have to agree it didnt seem to have any effect on my boy but the real stuff did. what are you needing it for. emx |

hi emma i can honestly say the 2 products i tried with 2 diffrent horses and with completley diffrent problems did work im not saying that all bute alternatives do work but globel herbs and equine america do work definatley better than feeding dust just out of intrest which product didnt work for you as one product might work for one and not for another lehla |

yes-our vet said he's seen horses on high dosage Bute for loooong period and hadn't seen the internal damages we are all warned about... I'll do some more quizzing and decide whether to try one or not... But thanks folks |

Hi, I have used bute x with good results on a horse who wouldn't take bute, bute x is not made with devils claw which I found less effective,

I use Danilon on my oldie and it has done him the power of good over the winter when his joints seized up with the cold and now he is back schooling again. I never use bute now as none of my horses will touch it but danilon has the same effects but without the sideeffects that long term bute can apparently cause. I think I am about 40p a day for a sachet from my vet. Or you can use a maintenance dose every other day or 1/2 sachet daily. Would definitely recommend as it is medicene rather than a supplement. I would not compete on it though, as it probably comes under the same restrictions as bute.
