I am possibly thinking about putting my Pure Bred Arab in foal this spring to a Section D - what are your thoughts about this? Would this be detrimental to my mares future selling price? Also, are the arab prices so low now due to the credit crunch or have these prices been static for a little while? Very undecided about what to do for the best. Thanks Dawn

Hi Dawn, are you thinking of putting your mare in foal, with a view to selling her in-foal. If so, my advice is DONT!!
As you say with the credit crunch, horses are a luxury and therefore the market has been very hard hit. By covering her, if anything, as an in foal mare, being pregnant would more than likely mean, a lesser price, than if she was offered as a ridden mare.
My advice is, think very hard before you consider going ahead with putting your mare in foal

Echo what has been said. People want either a very specific bloodline if they are into the Arabian breed, and the market for an infoal brood mare is much more difficult than for one not in foal.
The Welsh D cross produces an OK foal but only if you are prepared to keep the mare and sell the foal separately, as it will sell to a completely different market than those looking for a pure bred mare.
Prices at the Welsh breed sale I attended were also on the floor, with good mares making a few hundred whereas a year of so ago there would have been a thousand in front of it.
NOT breeding is the far best thing to do just now.

Everyone will have a different opinion on this but here's mine
Unless you are breeding for 'yourself' don't bother
If you breed a 'part-bred' foal it will not be detrimental to her future selling price but as Babs has said don't put her in foal to sell.
I'm quite a traditionalist and like to see pure bred Arabians, Anglo Arabians or Part Breds providing they are 'fit for a purpose' eg. riding pony, hack etc.
Breeding your pure bred mare to a Welsh 'D' will not make the part bred foal worth more than a pure bred foal. Although there are allot fewer quality part bred & Anglo foals registered each year than pure breds. For an example check our Vlacq Stud [Mrs Vlacq] or Sunray Stud [Babs] for inspiration. IMO they don't get better than this
Good luck with what ever you decide to do |

I agree with everyone else on this one - unless you plan to keep the foal for yourself then I wouldn't put your mare in foal. Well done in having a good think about it first, & not rushing into it repardless of the consequences. Lisa

Thanks everyone, if I went ahead with it, I would be selling the foal seperately from the mare, it's just that I have been given the chance to run her with a section D stallion free this summer and have briefly considered it. Bearing in mind what has been said, it probably is not an option as it means that I will have to keep her for another 2years or thereabouts and have two to sell instead of one. So haven't really told me any more than I knew myself but nice to have confirmation. Thanks again! |
