Hi everyone, I have acquired a beautiful little arab mare, she has excellent lines Dedja des Forges x Faery Wand and appears to have a strong connection to both racing and endurance. She is just 7 and I bought her to save her from being sent to a dealer. I have never had an arab before and I have never had any contact with endurance so not really sure what to do with her now. She was sold to me as unrideable, but after I had her back seen to and her teeth done, she has been ridden daily both schooling and hacking and so far hasn't put a foot wrong. I will eventually want to sell her on as she is too small for me to ride myself, but am really keen to get the best home possible for her, she is really a sweetie. How would I go about introducing her to endurance? Sorry for being so dense about this, but is it just about gradually increasing the length of riding she does? I guess it isn't that simple, but any help welcomed. Thanks loads. Dawn

Hi Dawn
Where abouts in the country are you? There are currently 2 endurance groups running rides - EGB and Sport Endurance
The EGB website www.endurancegb.co.uk - click on groups in the menu on the left hand side and that will give you details of the contact for that group. If you e-mail or ring them they will be able to help you get started
The Sport Endurance website is www.sportendurance.co.uk - click on contact and there is a list of contacts for the various groups but its a bit more difficult to figure out which one you fall under so it's probably best to ring Pam Wild, the secretary.
I'm based in Nottinghamshire and a member of Sport Endurance (mainly cos it's cheaper and they do more rides in my area) but have been a member of EGB - both societies have the good and bad points but are basically very friendly and helpful .
The best rides to start off with are the Pleasure rides - that way you can see how she handles the venue and vetting procedure (although SE don't have vet checks for Pleasure Rides)as well as all the horses out on route - give it a go, its great fun and you get to make some really good friends

I have a mare who I had raced and now do endurance with, mainly because she was horrid at the races and clearly had no intention of putting her best hoof forward! She had had a lot of time off prior to her first ride, and had been in work for 6 weeks. She did 20 miles like it was a walk in the park. It would be worth doing some background checks on her, someone may recognise the name, and if she has been very fit before it is much easier to get them going again. You might find you fall for arabs and end up with one that is big enough for you, I certainly had a big change of heart after buying my first arab! Good Luck Sally |

Hi Julia, wow never expected to hear from someone so local. I keep her at Edburton just down the road from you. Unfortunately I can't ride her myself I'm much to heavy for her, I'm looking for someone at the moment to ride her for me. I don't suppose you know anyone that might be interested do you? |

Hi Dawn - nice to meet someone local I'll send you a PM as I'd love to come and see you. There's plenty of opportunities for endurance around here and as you're on the Downs, plenty of training opportunities as well.

Sorry Dawn I didnt read your post properly re riding her. Are you at Hilary Sawyer's? I am going there tomorrow for a dressage lesson. She has been fabulous with my rather sharp little horse - also she is tiny which makes her good arab jockey. T, are you coming to watch? |

Hi Tabita,
I'm just along the road from Hilary - Just past Tottington Manor. What time is your lesson, I don't work on a Friday so might be able to come along. The person who has been schooling Samirah for me is a friend of Hilary and was taught to ride by her so you can see I have had someone really good riding her for me but she has now deserted me and gone off to Austalia to become a vet. I would love to send Sami to Hilary for a few weeks to really bring her on but not a possibility I'm afraid as money is really tight. I have 4 horses at the moment and really don't earn enough money to keep one. I am reducing, honestly, and Sami will have to go in the Spring I'm afraid, I just want to make sure she is shown to her best so that she gets a really good home. |

Hi Caro, I would love to but unfortunately I really wouldn't be able to ride Sami as I'm much too heavy for her. I fell into buying an Arab, it really wasn't intentional, I really wish I could do it, everyone has been so supportive and kind on this site.
