We are pulling together information on Spearmint, and I wonder if anyone else can help? So far, we have been very pleasantly surprised ):
Spearmint represents one of the last of his line of all Courthouse breeding. He was bred by Mrs Jean Oppe of Newnham Green Arabian Stud in 1982.
His dam Sappho was purchased by Mr and Mrs Pat Maxwell from Courthouse Stud and later sold to Mrs Oppe. The Maxwell’s had previously bred from Sappho the International Champion Mare Siwa, a full sister to Spearmint being by Shammar - Shammar himself was unbeaten in the showring in his time.
Spearmint was unshown until a 3 year old and was named Junior British National Champion in that year. He was also Reserve Supreme Overall behind Ralvon Elijah.
In 1987, he won the 5 year old stallion Class at the National Show and was Best Junior Stallion; he was also overall Champion at Royal Windsor.
In 1988, he was 2nd in Paris and 2nd at the European championships.
Thanks everyone.

Do you want to see a photo of him? Sorry but I don't know how to put them on here but can e-mail one to someone? I have a photo of him in the '3rd illustrated guide to the Arabian Horse in Great Britain'. Lisa |

Wow! I didn't realize he'd done all that! It doesn't surprise me though, as even in his more mature years he's still got 'it' What a precious horse he is. I'd love to see some photo's if anyone has any. If you don't know how to post them I can put them up for you |

I LOVE SPEARMINT, he's my favorite horse at AL Waha.
You could not wish for a nicer person, loves cuddles and perfect manners and yet still has 'it' just as Debs said. And still has that chestnut golden sheen at 26 years old - which was last year when I last saw him. |

I just loved Spearmint also. Always remember photos of him in AHS News when owned by Mrs Oppe. |

I have found the results posted in AHS Mag issues from 1985 to 1988 but I have some missing. Could some kind person look through the issues in those years (and I think also printed was a separate full results pamphlet from shows round the country)?
Spearmint came to us in 1997 after Mr Oppe died and Mrs Oppe was moving house, and she was not very well herself either. Mrs Oppe's daughter, who had no interest in Arabian horses, was going to send Spearmint as a teaser to Whitsbury Stud. We had tried to lease him before but when we heard his proposed 'fate', we phoned and picked him up immediately.
I have no photographs of him at shows? Thanks everyone for your interest and any help. = |

Hi,
I knew spearmint or bill as is his pet name whilst at mrs oppes and he was always gorgeous. Jackie shilling still has minty (Flaminta) who is by bill and won loads with her under saddle and I own ibn sappho (sappho x mamluk) both came from mrs oppe. Its great to see bill is still being used and producing some lovely offspring, I think i saw one for sale recently but cant remember where ? I have some old pictures of him somewhere from mrs oppes last open day before she sold up , I will try to dig them out. One memory i do have of him was going all the way to malvern with mrs oppe and Mark Baker (stud manager at the time) we arrived in plenty of time and had a look round, casually went back to get bill ready for his class and wandered down to the ring only to see the winner doing his lap of honour ! we had missed the whole class, not a good day but we did see the funny side of it afterwards ! give him a hug from me xx Dawn |

I have found this web site which you may not have explored, (or may have). Click on the UK flag for English, although it seems fairly self explanatoryhttp://www.sukuposti.net/fakta.php?Numero=364273
It claims he was a Junior Male Champion 1985, but does not explain where, or at what level. It also has a database to search that could be of interest to anybody with time on their hands .
On a slightly different thread on Toman of interest to you, I am sure you will have seen this, probably back in 2000. http://www.crabbet.com/breeders/ukbreeders/UKalwaha.html
How very interesting to look back at the perception of Toman even then |

Misterei, thank you so much for the link regarding Toman - how wonderful to see others saw his "potential" at such an early age. My gift was that Al Waha agreed to part with him Let us hope his children show such potential also. Today I watched his young son playing outside with his friend - he really lifted my spirits on a cold but bright day.
But I digress away from the wonderful Spearmint - he really has produced such lovely offspring for Al Waha and Mrs Archer - he really is a genuine kind elderly gentleman (altho never let him hear you say the word "elserly") Lets hope he leaves many more lovely offspring - altho I believe Al Waha have semen stored |
