I have never had a stallion castrated that late, although I have alot of friends who have and not suffered any serious effects, although I know there is alot of people who say the shock is really bad for them, I think in your position I would ask a good equine vet and weigh up the pro's and cons and decide on the facts from an expert if you think its right for your boy, sorry I could not be better help x |

I know of a 13 year old arab stallion be castrated and he was fine, no comps still a bit 'full of himself' though. But is 15 now and still live and kickin'.I think its more of a case by case basis, some are fine some get complications, your best off talking to your vet,who knows your horse to give you some idea of how likely your boy is to get over it fine. goodluck!! |

My 20 y.o. had a tumour in one testicle. I had him operated on in November and they removed just the one testicle. They took only one so that the operating was quicker, because the tumour was quite large. I was very frightened that he would not live through the operation. He was fine, had painkillers for a week and recovered quicker than the two three year olds that were castrated last year. He will be 21 on Friday the 16th. Happy birthday Spider.

I know of a stallion that was gelded at 18 years old - as far as I know he had no complications. The reason he was gelded so late was that I owned him many years ago, & the lady that I sold him to died of cancer ( she owned him for about 10 years). I was offered him back but sadly I felt I wasn't in a position to have him at home as I had a colt that I had bred & don't have the facilities for 2 entires. He was rehomed to the ILPH who still have him but are trying to rehome him - but at least he is in a place where he is well cared for & may be easier to home than a stallion - very sad though that he was gelded so late in life. Hi I used to work in a equine veterinary hospital. We did lots of castrations, some older stallions and they recovered fine, the older stallions were all done under a general anaesthetic and had a closed castrate, this means that the inguinal ring is surgically closed. This will prevent the occurance of his intestines falling down through this as some times happen in the standing castrate of the older stallion. There is a small anaesthetic risk but we only ever lost 2 horses under anaesthetic and these were colics that were very sick.
Although more expensive, I would have him done surgically if he was mine.
Hope all this helps. |

He has never covered a mare and recently at home he has become very bolshy and frets when he can not see our mares. He is become very difficult to handle and I am worried he will hurt me or my aunt. I also think he will be alot happier. But am just so worried.
Thank you
