Hi, just been to look at a livery close to work, but not home.5 other horses on yard, you get your own paddock, all looking pretty good! own feed/tack room good stable well draining, £15.00wk have to provide own hay and bedding, no menage ok hacking.
How much does is cost a week in hay? straw bales for one horse, would you go for small black wrapped bales or hay, (have a hay loft)

Sounds good to me I would go for it. I have my two at DIY Livery just outside St. Fagan’s £14 per week for stable and turnout and shared tack feed room. All the horses live in one big herd (22 mares and geldings) and all get on really well together. Also it only takes me 10min to get to the farm so very convenient for me, especially as I have to visit twice a day. Hay bought from the farm is £3.00 a bale and haylage small size from a place near bye is £6.50 and will last three days for the two horses. Last year they were in for five months but this year decided to save money and they just come in for 6 to 9hours a day with feed and hay and then out over night, it's working really well they look great and I have saved a fortune on bedding (and back ache mucking out) Anyway good luck and happy new year.

Hi Angel - Just one question (not about the hay and straw tho) if you have your own paddock does that mean that Baz will be out alone? Only I thought that would be good too for Rafa until he jumped out the field to be with the other horses! He now lives quite happily with the herd lol - Georgina and Rafa oh ps I havent forgotten the photos I will email them to you soon when i think of a suitable thread. |

I'm £16 for a large round bale of excellent hay which lasts me about two weeks and £7 for a large bale of again excelelnt straw - on my second so far this winter as I only use it to bed down their shelter.

Two weeks for how many horses, Lindsay? I pay £15 for a large round haylage bale delivered by farmer down the road which lasts for 10 days feeding three. They have 9 full nets of hay a day between them, so very little wasted, which I think would happen if I just had the bale plonked in the field. I would be interested to compare this with others of you who use the large round bales.
Angel, that sounds like a good deal, I pay £20 per horse for similar facilities, but I do have the place to myself |

I only have two but up here in the wilds of NE Scotland I have very little grazing from about mid October until mid March - I can stretch a bale out to three weeks but since we have had two weeks of very hard frost so they have been getting and eating a bit extra as they have nothing to pick at in the field.

Wish I could find DIY for £15.00 pw,I pay £90.00 per month each horse, the cost of hay and straw will depend upon your horse, one of mine goes through a bale of straw every 10 days or so, the other every 2 days, the same with hay one will eat between 1-2 bales a week, while the other will eat 2-3, but the last 2 weeks between them they have been eating about 6 bales a week between them, |

Hey Susan! sorry you missed the dinner! wanted to have a good old natter to you, you do know if you have any vacancies at your yard Im the first one you should tell lol. Where do you get your hay from? do you have to buy in bulk? would be interested... could get our YO to buy a load, cut down the cost, Im on part livery as work long hours this costs me £37 per week which is very good, I get through 2 bales a week easy at mo due to grass being killed etc, Sky does drop off in the colder months, he has two hard feeds a day also of chaff and build up mix normally, with biotin. I would do a bale of shavings a week if I could afford it,but tend to do one every 2 weeks and deep litter. |

Surrey is soooo expensive for everything. I'm really feeling the strain at the moment with feed and bedding.
I rent my own 2 horse stable yard and paddocks and a friend helps and rides one of mine. They come in at night to preserve the paddocks - no grass at the moment but no mud either as fields are very dry. At last no mud fever!
I pay £40 a week rent - which is very good round me!
Hay £3.75 a bale Large haylage £7-8.80 a bale Small halage £5.60-£6.50 a bale Bedmax has just gone up 60p to £7.09!
For 2 x 14.2hh: I use 2 Bedmax a week (skip out during week and big clear out at the weekend). Hay about a bale a day (nets in field) and ad lib in stables Haylage 3 x small bags a week
At the moment my feed (I use alfalfa/alfabeet) and bedding costs about £270 a month
Have been thinking about going back to good old straw but am worried about the smell (I have to leave the yard to go to the office and can't go smelling of wee!). Also would it rot down quicker than Bedmax or similar??
Any straw fans out there??
Roll on the spring and some grass and hacking out after work.... dream, dream

Hi,
I use straw and yes it can smell but always have baby wipes and body spray to hand !! we pay £1.50 bale of straw lovely golden bales and £2.80 bale of really top quality hay, we buy in bulk and get it delivered so works really well.
I used easibed for both of mine for about a year as had to take my muck pile away every week and this was easier but cost a fortune ! Dawn |
