Hi all Hope u are all ok and merry christmas and Happy New Year!!1
I have a new boy...a 15.2hh grey arab gelding who is incredibly itchy! He had sweet itch and now his mane is growing back really well...his tail was never really bad. I treated it with benzyl benzoate but he still seems very itchy all over! Are there any supplements that you could recommend as this must be sending him bonkers! Also my dog is suffering the same way...he rolled in their field last week and is now going crazy with itching. We have walked the field and really can't see anything unusual!! Help

I was thinking it could be hives (urticaria) your boy is suffering from until you mentioned the dog is itching too You can give your horse antihistamine tablets to relieve the itching meantime, until you identify the source of the problem. You'll have to administer a large dose to treat him. I use "Tesco" One a day hayfever tablets and give them them whole packet ie (7). HTH and let us know if you find out what's caused it |

What are you feeding? A friend's horse went crazy itchy. She checked his food and it had crushed shellfish in - he was allergic!!!
Just a thought.

It's not mange is it? Maybe a you have a mangy fox also rolling in the Field? Just a thought. Apart from getting them checked by a vet I know Apple Cider Vinegar is great for itchy skin. It's best applied as a final rinse after a bath so no good for this time of year, but you could add it to their feed? Also cut and feed dried nettles to your horse this helps purify the blood as toxins build up in the liver with sweet-itch. Good luck. |

It's very unusual for a horse to be suffering from sweet-itch in the Winter as it is caused by midge's which are not about this time of year. It sounds more like some sort of lice have you had a good look through your horse's mane and your dogs coat? Frontline spray form your vet works well on lice (recommended for cats and dogs but also works on horses). A few years ago I owned an arab who suffered from sweetitch he always wore a fly rug in the Summer and early Autumn and I used a lotion on his mane and tail - as long as I always kept up the treatment he was fine.
Hope this helps and happy new year Ali

Hi, It really does sound like mange. If it is, Piriton or any other anti-histamine will only help the itching to a small degree. You really will need to treat the cause!Speak to your vet about either doing a scrapeing or ask their advice.Mange is also caught by us humans,so if the dog has it you need to be very carefull.I have used camrosa ointment on my dog when she had mange, but that was after her tablets from the vet had started to get it under control.Good luck and keep us posted. jane |

I agree with the others, it sounds like it needs investigating in case its anything living in the skin or coat, ask your vet. I alsways swear by NAF D Itch, a dose a day. Also, think its too cold for sweetitch. A pal of mine had bugs in her rug, they played havoc with the horse and she had to get the vet to check it out. There an injection now, speak to you vet for both Dog & horse. Sue |

Hi, I had a sweet itch pony for many years and it was very frustrating i found the best product at the time was camrosa ointment it is fairly expensive but it does work, there are also some very good supplements available from global herbs hope this is of any help!

Your poor horse, it must be driving him crazy. Depending on the problem of the itching, neem leaf fed internally is great for so many problems. Also if the problem is with coat mites/mange etc neem shampoo works wonders. This way you are treating your horse naturally and not using nasty chemicals which can make things worse for your horse.
Also I agree that it`s a good idea to check the ingredients in his food, some of the ingredients in some foods should not be fed to horses and they can have real bad reactions to some of the ingredients. |

Another thing that is good would be to treat your dog and possibly horse with Advocate, its a spot on like front line but works incredibly quickly for mange. I feed the simple system diet (well my own variaion of it!) Seaweed, Linseed, Brewers Yeast are fab for skin. Cider apple vinegar is a natural anti fungal/bacterial so to feed as well as topically apply would be good. For Sweetitch a witch told me to use equal measures Baby oil, vinegar(cider apple best) a few drops iodine then a bit of water shake vigourously then apply(wearing gloves) the baby oil helps it stick and really heals sore skin but helps prevent wonderfully! Good luck keep us posted! Leighx |
