Its interesting that people attribute type to looks only.
Sometimes that can be the only problem with the bigger horses, they have no type in their ride. However this is not only the big ones, some 15hh ones ride like Hacks but in my experience it's mostly the bigger ones you have that problem with.

Gosh Helen can you post pictures? I'd love to see your stallion.
Louise can you be more specific? With a 15.3 and a 14.2 I must test them to see if there's a difference in the 'feel' of their ride. I've always just accepted them without thinking of 'Arab ride type'. |

Have to agree with Louise, size shouldn't matter too much it's the ride that counts and as Alistair says Arabs are known to be weight carriers, can you think of any Arab men that are a size 0 and weight 9 stone
Nick - I haven't had the opportunity to meet Satin Lady in the flesh but from a photo I would guess at 14.2 to 14'3
Sorry I haven't called you and Mair yet, will try over the weekend :)
Take care

It is interesting to hear what Louise and Laura have to say, both DO RIDE many different horses. And I agree with my more limited ridng that the feeling you get bears no relation to the physical height. My crabbet 14.2 mare 'felt' the same to ride as the huge 16.3 built like a tank warmblood my friend had, that had the same scopey movement of the Arab.
another tall one who has retained type is Tehema na sidiqa, i would love to see him under saddle. |

Fahrenheit is 5 yrs and 16hh. Vet reckons he might go a touch bigger! Apparently Polish arabs can keep growing well into 6 yrs old |

Ive seen typey looking tall and shorter horses and not typey looking tall and shorter horses. I agree with the above that each and every horse gives their individual feel and size doesnt seem to indicate what feel you are going to get.
Horses can get their height in different ways, some have long legs some have deep bodies on shorter legs.
One thing i have noted is that some taller horse and of course some of the shorter ones have very long/ overly long cannon bones, when this is out of proportion its something i would consider a conformation weakness. |

Yup - short cannons are a must, as are the correct set of angles in the hind leg. A mare we bred here as the most perfect front legs (should be documented) - not boasting, she had other weaker areas, and was quite old fashioned looking in head and croup (incidentally, I think croupy horses are often the best true movers) . She is only 14.2hh but good bone, feet and depth, plenty of front - I bet she rides much bigger for her owners. |

I will have to wait a few months to see if Rafa maintains an 'arab' ride as he isnt backed yet. He has good paces so Im hoping that he will be fine. It good to hear from some judges too, as I wondered what their opinion on the taller arabian for the show ring was. Georgina x |

Whats an 'arab' ride as opposed to a non - arab ride? And how do hacks differ in the ride to ridden arabs? Just curious... |

Dennis is a tall boy being a smidge under 16hh, he's exceptionally deep in the body too - he takes a 52" girth!!!
Nick - I've seen Satin Lady but did't look at her like that, just admired her so my guess is 14.1 1/2hh!!! She has so much presence that I'm guessing she is shorter than the impression she gives! |

I can't compare the 'arab' ride to a show hack, but their movement should be different. Its said an arab should not move like the daisy cutting action of a show hack, so they must feel different.
I can compare them to your bog standard cob of the same size, as we used to swap rides with the many cob owners round here. Although Arabs have wide sprung rib cage and take a wider fitting saddle than most realise, they dont feel wide in the same way. They have an energetic stride that does not rock or wobble you anywhere, they are comfy to sit at trot, unlike the cobs who have shorter choppy non cushioned strides that are quite frankly tiring after riding arabs.
I was really surprised that the warmblood mare felt so Arab like to ride, but her paces were arab like, very free. |
