I would say the only thing that Hartley(Arab)really does is lip smacking. He does a bit of head wringing but usually when he's hooning around the field. William (ISH)does a bit of teeth grinding and nodding, usually when he's at a horse show standing in the line up so I think that must be a bit of anxiety/excitment/nervousness? |

I agree most of our horses have unusual behaviour because they ARE arabians and therefore try to communicate their needs through certain gestures. Pawing the ground, lifting a leg and holding it up, pulling funny faces, twisting their heads in a full circle, All mine have done these things and more I would be happy to help with your survey Ps is this odd behaviour?

Hi All,
Thanks for the new replies. I will contact each of you asap.
I have a horse who leg waves and she is one of the nicest horses you could hope to meet so I am not infering anything about the horses character. |

I would be really interested in this research and the results. We all know Arabs are much more sensitive and intelligent, and try any way they can to get their dumb humans to understand them. I have a serious head nodder but only when stabled in the summer (assuming summer weather to be nice), horrible weather - no head nodding ! Also a gelding who does a lot of weird things but has a huge habit of air pawing whilst pulling the most horrendous open mouthed face - he does it when asking for food, but also when in other forms of distress such as when just loaded as he finds travelling stressful, and when something is happening that he is unsure of. He never does it whilst chilled and happy. If I stay with him he immediately stops - as soon as I walk away he tris to me he is upset. I dont see this as a stable vice at all - it is clearly communication. |

Hi Emma We have a 3/4 TB/Welsh who taps her front foot incessantly when she wants something i.e. food, to go out etc. My old boy who was distantly related to her used to stand on 3 legs and wave his one foot around while he was eating.
Of course my PB Arabs are all PERFECT! - actually both head wring when they are excited - in fact they copy each other in the stable to make sure that I notice which one looks the prettiest! They are quite closely related and are like carbon copies of each other so I think there must be something in the hereditary theory.
Happy to take part if any of this is any use to you.

My Harry -head rings, but only when he is happy. The more he enjoys the ride, the more he does it The girls wave legs for food-begging mode Shahi makes funnny noises, when it is dinner time or when she is stressed. Now Steve, he gets all amorous when I am cooking a nice dinner-ooops-forgot we are talking horses only Perhaps there is little difference between us |
