Vague question but what saddles do you all use on your Arabs, & what sizes are they all in? Anyone using synthetics - or tried the Thorowgood Cob? Thanks Lisa

Tried a X (not sure how many X's) wide Thoroughgood Cob on my barrel shaped boy, and it went nowhere near him. I've heard a lot of people prefer them to the Wintecs though, for arab shapes. I tried a XW Jill Thomas Endurance saddle (Thoroughgood) and that was nice, but he would've outgrown it very quickly. Better panel shapes I think, wider.
I have a Heather Moffet part treed Fhoenix and love it, and Jack seems to too. Before that, I had a Barefoot Cheyenne (treeless) and loved that, just wanted some knee rolls
Have tried other treeless's, the Sensation (he liked it, I didn't like it on the inside of my thighs), the Freeform (too short for me and he couldn't take longer).
Also, other treed, Saddle Company WH and GP - even the 17" WH was too long in the panel. Arabian Saddle Company Solstice (Endurance) - we both liked that, but again, he outgrew the XW. If I were to buy another treed saddle, I'd have one of those made to measure. It was supremely comfy, superceded only by the Fhoenix and Barefoot.
For size wise, most saddles he can only take 16 1/2" if it's straight cut, possibly a 17". I have the Fhoenix in a 17" GP, but the inner flap is cut back and because of the nature of the saddle, even though the tree is in the back, it moulds to the shape and so I'm not pressing on his loins. Almost two years ago at age 4, he was measured a XXX Wide in the Saddle Company saddles. God knows what he'd be now!
I think you'll find someone on here who has tried (and loved, and hated) every single type of saddle made! It depends on your horse, and you, and what you're going to do. |

The reason I'm asking, is that I'm having a day off tomorrow & going to York Horse Sales. My friend says that last month, brand new syntheitic saddles weren't making much more than £50! At that price, I can buy one & sell it on if it doesn't fit. Knowing my luck, everyone will be looking for a saddle tomorrow! Thanks for the comments so far & looking forward to reading more replies. I've got a "selection" of saddles I use on my boys depending on what stage they're at My favourite, by far, are the Arabian Saddle Company Showring saddles Got 3 of those in sizes 16.5" & 17", medium wide, wide and extra wide They're great for showing, dressage, endurance and general hacking. Also got a 17" Wintec 500 with black, blue and red gullets, which is vey useful for horses that are forever changing shape! plus a Jill Thomas Thorowgood Endurance 16.5" Wide which I rather like too! |

Hi Rosie, If you're going to get a synthetic, my saddler recommends you get a flocked one without sealed panels and preferably with a changeable gullet system, so that it can be easily adjusted when necessary. I really like the Wintec 500 I'm riding Khebir in at the moment. Fits really well, never moves and is actually rather comfy! |

Definitely interested in one with a changeable gullet, as we have a youngster, which in a few years time when he is ready for backing, will change shape constantly for a few years. Also, the saddle that I have on Rosie which fitted her perfectly for MANY years doesn't fit at the moment She is not ridden at the moment, but once I bring her back into work, soon tones up so it will probably fit again? I've got an Arabian Saddle (sylvan GP model), a Wintec 2000 GP with flocking and adjustable tree, I find this a great saddle to break youngsters in and as Jill says get one with flocking so that it can be adjusted easily and also a WOW VSD saddle. I love all of them for different reasons!
The Arabian is lovely to do showing in, the Wintec great for riding in for hours on end and the WOW just makes you sit so correctly and hides a multitude of sins!!! |

lucky you's with your 16/17inch saddles my boy can only take a 15inch at a push anything longer hurts his back, but hes only a 5ft 6 rug and is 15h. what size of rug does everyone else have on their arabs with the bigger saddles. |

I use 'Ideal Endurance and show saddles (Ramsay and forgot what the other one is called), but they seem to find my girls really well. I found as they are cut straight at the front it really lets them move the shoulder/front leg. I did not realise what a huge difference it would make, I used a GP saddle before. I suppose all (even arabs) horses come in different shapes and sizes, so no one size fits all. |

We've tried all sorts! Wintec Isabell is our saddle of choice at the minute.. Nice an comfy for me (though it does throw my lower leg back too far) Spider is happy in it (he won the prelim class we did last weekend woohoo sorry that was gratuitous). Its a 17 inch and a medium gullet even though he is 'extra wide' in pretty much everything else despite not being obviously wide. |

I have an Ideal Jessica which is just like an armchair to ride in... can't recommend them highly enough! I did have an Ideal Event as well (again, lovely to ride in!) but my mare changed shape.
Good luck!

An Exmoor treefree ... comfort at last for me and Tanni! Had a GFS before which didn't suit once he changed shape, tried out a Farington (which was lovely but not wide enough); hated the WOW; loved the Bob Marshall (but sold it when he went out on loan). I had an Arabian Saddle Co Sylvan for Rossi which was gorgeous but didn't fit Tanni, so I sold it. Oh and nearly forgot the Wintec Isabell Werth which is a great saddle, but belonged to my daughter who has now sold it ...
If I was going to show him I wouldn't hesitate to get another Wintec, but we're happy hackers now ... |

I have a FnE GP saddle and we both are very happy in it. We hack out in it, have done pleasure ride in it (really comfy) and will be doing novice CR next year. We also do some jumping in it.
Cinny was a bit tricky for saddle fitting as she is typical arab and v wide with her girthing point up round her elbows - but the FnE seems to suit her well.
Good luck in your search....

I have just recently had a saddle fitter out,to try and find a saddle to fit Happy and after emptying his whole van!He left me a 17.2"med fit S/H IV horse show/dressage saddle, which is apparently perfect for him,I have not managed to try it more than a couple of times yet,but feel that it throws me forward slightly, not too sure about it.I have an arabian company sylvian saddle for Stazi, which fits him perfectly and I plan to back him in that once he is fully recovered.

I use a treeless dressage saddle from equine whispers have done ever since I rebacked my boy and he is going lovely in it. freedom of movement no tightness and his muscles have developed beautifully. |
