My stallion will be coming home in about a month, I have the two girls together, which is brill and he has always been stabled and turned out next to mares with no bother at all and I was wondering as he is getting older (17) whether it would be nice to give him some company whether it be a sheep, dexter cow, pony or what he is a stallion, but he is very gentle but has never had field/stable company apart from next stable /field........... is this me being silly, I just keep thinking it would be so nice for him to have something else all to himself what do you think advice and comments will be gratefully received

I certainly think he would benifit from company. Can you speak to a local farmer and see if you can "borrow" a few different species and se what he prefers? Would he get on well with a pony gelding? Ros x |

Is he used to seeing farm animals?
My boy is out with 2 bulls at the moment and sometimes cows and calves depending, oh yes and the odd stray piglet. Im hoping to get him a miniature companion too!
My boy was out with geldings and colts up until aged 3 yrs and since has been stabled and turned out next door to mares so is pretty well socialised combined with hs laid back attitude to life. |

Welllll I was thinking about getting a miniature pony or something like that but before my boy, my first meeting with stallions close up was working at Newmarket and therefore thought all stallions the same it was only much later in years that I found they were not all the snorting mad things that I had seen before and just thought it would be so nice for him to have something to itch, scratch and groom and be close too, and there are no farmers near me, I don't know anything about sheep or cattle or goats |

If he's spent most of his life happily contained in his own kingdom next to his hareem, I'd think that would be the way to keep it so he stays secure in what he knows best. I'd be very careful about introducing another horse as he might well be jealous; he is a hot blooded male after all and is sure to feel possessive about his wives! |

Please be very careful if you are thinking of putting your boy with a gelding. If he has always been on his own he my not take kindly to having competition in his field and many a stallion's biggest hate is a gelding. I have seen more than one very quiet, amiable stallion very nearly kill a gelding when it had got through the fence into the stallion's field. IMO a bullock or sheep would be favourite but many stallions like their own space as long as they can see other horses.

I would be wary about sheep too - my boys loves them a bit too much and has been known to pick them up!! Not very nice for the sheep x |

Our old TB had a non-breeding (aging) wife for many years so he always had someone to scrath with etc, would share his tea with her and perhaps a bit of recreational romance |

Hi Gerri
Since telling Fabbi he is returning home very soon he has been grinning from ear to ear!!!
He currently has a gelding stabled next to him, they can touch noses but thats all but they get on really well. Occasionally Fabbi tells him he is a stallion when Gerri (gelding) gets to near his haynet but any horse would do that over food!! |
