Hi all Does anybody have any info on this mare, Kildalton Mona by Alnazr and out of EBS Surprise?
She is the dam of my mare Bas Baseeta (Crusader x Kildalton Mona)
I have spent ages tracing my mares bloodlines, and just recently tracked her dam's dam EBS Surprise down in Ireland, I managed to get some photos but also the news that she died this year.
I also found out that Kildalton Mona was sold in Ireland in January 1991 to Mrs J Quinn of Milriq Stud, Cloughjordan (all spelling dubious as writing was hard to decipher)
Does anybody know anything about this mare ? I also found out the following recently from the Heirloom Society :The dam of Bas Baseeta is an Heirloom horse. She was exported from the US, carrying Bas Baseeta in utero, in 1989 when the renowned breeder Vincent Melzac presented a breeding herd of 7 Heirloom Arabians of Pritzlaff bloodlines to the Irish government. EBS Surprise descends from the taproot mare Basilisk, and is a Saqlawiyah Jedraniyah ibn ed Derri--a very choice lineage.
I lost my wonderful Bas Baseeta, and any information of relations/progeny/whereabouts/photos of the dam or relations would be very gratefully received. Also any more information on Heirloom mares/breeding especially in the UK.
Thank you all for reading this Fingers x

I'm afraid I can't help with your mare - and I'm very sorry to hear you lost her - but I have Basilisk line horses and a policy of crossing to Al Khamsa-bred stallions to preserve Arab type, so i would be fascinated to see any photos to see if she was anything like my lot

Most of my other photos are hard copies so would need to try to scan them, but hope this gives an idea. Keren, would love to see pics of yours and breeding info! I have 2 other mares with Egyptian lines (one goes back to Saqlawiyah Jidraniyah tail female line, and one to Dahmah Shahwaniyah Ali Pasha, and wanting to breed both mares) |

The place at cloughjordan was sold to friends of mine, they saw the couple of Arabs they had when they viewed to buy, and as far as I know the arabs were sold when the smallholding was sold.
sorry can't be more help, but my friend died a few years later so no one else to ask. is a small place though, anyone in the CJ phone book might know of the quins and where they went, try the local post office there. |

The name of the place was Mullenkeagh, if I remember correctly, if this helps. The new owners took a mare with them in foal to my pure bred stallion that was called Mullenkeagh Emerald, as far as I am aware after the house name. |

Some years ago, there was a photo of Kilda;ton Mona in the AHS News. Browns Arabian Sud had found her in Ireland, in foal to an ID or ID X, if my memory serves me correctly. She had a pulled mane in the photo. |

Thank you all. I cant bring up anything on Mullenkeagh or Mullenkeagh Emerald as yet. Although I haved brought up a photo of Mullenkeagh House, Cloughjordan - may have been her home ? Also struggling to get back copy of the AHS news on the web, so will give them a call. I searched for the Browns in the UK and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, when I first got Bas Baseeta, because on her Reg Certif it shows breeder Mr & Mrs D & C Brown, Of Dhahran - but I never could find anything. I didnt know if they went from the UK to Saudi, or came from Saudi to the UK. I never looked in Ireland til now but I still cant bring anything up on the Browns. I have come up Thanks to the lovely lady at The Heirloom Society with some more info on siblings :- In 1991, EBS Surprise gave birth to Kildalton Golden Orchid, a chestnut mare by Carl Raswan RSI (a stallion bred by Richard Pritzlaff.) In 1994, Surprise bore a chestnut colt named Kildalton Greggan, by the Melzac-bred sire Greggan's Timothy. In 1996, Surprise gave birth to another chestnut filly by Carl Raswan RSI, named Kildalton Rabanna.
Mona herself was bred to Carl Raswan RSI and gave birth to a chestnut Heirloom colt, Ibn Carl Raswan, in 1994. At the time, she was owned by Julienne Goldsmith-Quinn of Ireland. "
This is of course the Mrs Quinn, that I can see Kildalton Mona being sold to. However, as you have already advised the house was sold, and there the trail seems to go cold. I cant seem to find the Quinns or the horses. But I will keep trying.
Thank you to ALL of you who have helped so far

The house as I remember was a typical small farmhouse, with an extention to one side that I think was accessed from a separate doorway.
I was pretty tired when I was there, literally did it as a day trip taking overnight ferry and a bus, got lift back to dublin to catch the ferry back just before midnight. Its a long way to Tipperary, as they say.
Do you have a web ref for the photo, as there were classier houses in the village, this had some farm buildings and around 8 acres. |

I think Liz Needham based at Belvoir Castle used to care for the Browns Arabs - she might have some info ... |

Hi Nicki,
According to AHR's Datasource, both Mona and Surprise were bred from after the progeny you list (and after Mrs Goldsmith-Quinn's brief involvement) by the Mr N Storey who bred Mona herself.
Mona had a grey colt BAS Basaam by Al Hakkim in 1997 and a grey filly BAS Badriya in 1998 by Kheiralla both bred by the previously mentioned Browns. The Browns also had 2 Doyle mares by the way - 100% Blunt breeding like the stallion Kildimo who was leased by Maureen de Popp's Milla Lauquen Stud in the late 80's.
None of these horses are currently listed as having progeny themselves.
Mr N Storey also continued to breed from Surprise.
Surprise had the three by Carl Raswan RSI and Greggan's Timonthy that you list followed by two further colts in 1998 and 2000 also by Carl Raswan RSI, Kildalton Mosaic and Kildalton Solo respectively.
I then picked up Surprise in the AHS studbooks, still with Mr N Storey.
She had a 2003 black filly by Mavros called Kildalton Mantilla and a grey filly called Kildalton Saphire in 2004 by the same sire.
Kildalton Mona also turns up in Vol 20 of the AHS studbooks.
She had a 2000 chestnut colt by King of the Nile for a Mr Nicholas J Martine followed by a chestnut filly Princess Mona Al Shams by the same in 2002 bred by Mr David Brown - so Mr of the Brown's does appear to still be in the UK somewhere.
I also fell across two other "Kildalton" mares in the same studbook both being bred from by the same Mr Nicholas J Martine, Danah and Silhouette. They both carry that Rabanna branch of the Basilisk line but through the middle of the pedigree, being Dahmah Shahwanieh by strain.
Perhaps someone on this thread will be able to tell you how to track down Mr Martine who seems to have been recently acquainted with David Brown too. Alexia |

Thanks Athena, thats load of information - great stuff for me to follow up on. Isnt the world a small place - one of my mares came from Mrs de Popp ! totally different breeding and also I didnt realise Kildimo was ever leased by them! I bought a colt (now gelded) with those bloodlines. Anyway, I digress, I've been trying to track down the Browns and Mr/Dr Martine but not really got anywhere, although I do now have a lead from somewhere Kildalton Mona was about 3 years ago, but didnt manage to get through by email, so have now been phoning. Fingers crossed. I so much want to see if I can find Kildalton Mona and see her, and see how much like my mare she was. Also to be able to find one of her siblings and again see how they compare would be just wonderful. At least now the timings are all getting much more recent, 2004 is the closest I've got. I'm so sad that I only tracked down EBS Surprise just after she died, and determined to try and find Kildalton Mona before the same happens. Thank you HUGELY to all for help so far xxx |

Hi Nicki, I'm sure you'll get there. Have you tried trying to get in touch with the owners of stallions that these mares were bred to? I just noticed that the sires Mr Martine used were Meranti /RJ Hutchings connected - would they be able to help? Love to know if you get anywhere anyway - keep us all posted. |
