have seen a few snippets on here about new laws have looked on BHS website but can't find anything, please can someone fill me in whats changing, and i see farmkey will freeze mark a horse shoe to show that your horse is microchipped, do you think this is worth whiile or should you just get a full freeze mark done? would this affect a shown horse?
phew out of breath now, sorry

Dont know about the new laws but I would get my horse freezemarked instead of micro chipped as the micro chip can migrate and be difficult to detect also it is not a visual deterent. As far as I know freezemarking does not affect showing at all. |

Personally I would rather microchip as it is less invasive. The likely hood of the chip moving is exceptionally low and greatly over talked up.
Also given microchiping is going to be compulsory in the next few years it is the way to go.
Horse and hound reported this several weeks ago.

I am getting both done. You can get what they call a micromark done when you have had them chipped but personally I wanted to have both as if someone had a stolen add they could see from a distance her freezemark number, otherwise there is trying to get a scanner to check if it's her.
I have always had both for mine as I would be heartbroken to loose one so would do anything to make her obvious |

I had both done on Ollie and I'm glad I did. Joe is just chipped but I am planning to freezemark him this winter. I saw a show horse last summer with a freezemark under his mane which barely showed for showing purposes but was just as much there for security purposes. I might go down that route for Joe. |

I have my mare and gelding done with both, which are where there saddle goes, my filly is only five months but is microchipped. I will have her freezemarked as soon as she is old enough. I used to show my gelding at different levels and he has won many classes in hand with the freezmark, It really should not affect them for showing as it is not default just a security measure

I wonder if microchips will be as well 'policed' as passports????
Sorry to be cynical, but it seems that the 'authorities' are just trying to squeeze more money out of law-abiding citizens
Freezemarking is an obvious visual deterrent, but freezemarks have been known to be defaced or ignored in the past.
ps. Suelin, my stallion was freezemarked under his mane in 1988, and the mark couldn't be seen until he did his trot past the judge, when his mane flew in the air (didn't stop him winning though)

Both if mine are microchipped and I am looking into freezemarking too but as yet am undecided whether or not to opt for it. |

I had my eldest Gelding Shah freezed marked when he was a 2 yr old. We showed for many years (he is now 18) both in-hand and under saddle and the freeze mark didnt make any difference at all. Georgina |

you can also get hoof stamps done, although it does need re-doing its quite cheap, you can have a mark that inicates that your horse is microchipped or your post code,it can be done by a farrier and isnt as obvious as a freezemark (for showing purposes) but is an extra deterrent. Em X |

Hi Angel - to be honest i havent really given it much thought. I had Shah done because we were on a DIY yard very close to a bridle path and a few main roads. Also no one lived on the yard, so i thought it best to get him done. It def worth considering, although Shah played up like crazy when they did it and the guy said ( cos there were a few to be done) I hope thats the worst one lol luckily he was! Georgina x |

Mine are both microchipped, as they're both grey I don't see the point in freezemarking, it's just high maintainance keeping it showing
I do have several liveries that are freezemarked though and so I have warning signs on the gates to the yard and in front of each stable block warning that the horses are microchipped and freezemarked.
I think that alone is a good deterent as well |
