I have a new horse Before i start i cant afford to buy rubber matting this year but am saving for some for him next summer He is on straw at the mo, but he eats all his bed, so has nothing to lye on. Staw cost me £2.00 a bale but its good stuff and i dont mind all that much him eating it except for the fact the by the time he has finished thats his bed gon for the night I put in two hole bales on Sat put dirty used bed on top and sunday morning all that was left was poo I need some cheep alternative Has any one used Elephant grassDo they eat it or how about eco bedding, its like cardboard chippings. I dont want to do shavings, cant really get hold of them for less than about £8.00 a bale!. Thanks xxxx

When I kept my horses on straw it was normal to set the bed up using 3 to 4 bales and then top up daily with half a bale so it doesn't sound to me like you are using too much straw!
I changed to Ecobed when I could not get hold of decent straw - about 5 years ago now. I can't say enough good things about it. To me there wasn't a down side. It's about £5.50 a bale.
Last year Dennis went to a rehab yard that used paper, I now use paper for all of mine and again I can't say a bad thing about it other than you have to get busy with the broom. Which at £4 a bale is a small price to pay. |

Hey Vera, Sorry did not word it quite right, his bed was already set up, he eats all of it every night!! I mean there is nothing left.... I set up with 4 bales and then have to add at least 1 - bales a day to give him something to lye on, he is going be the size of a house at this rate!!! How easy is ecobed / paper? he is a messy horse.... poos every where and then sort of mulches it all in..... I like the look of eco bed... Where do you get your paper from? Is there a name for it, cant seem to find any one round me that does sell paper xxxx |

I get the paper from a local supplier, it isn't branded but if its good enough for Liphook Equine Hospital to use its good enough for me!
I find with the messy ones the answer is to use more bedding not less.

Yes, more bed for dirty beasts
I use chopped straw which comes treated with virkon and sprayed with eucalyptus so they don't eat it |

With the threat of shavings shortage this year, I have gone to Dengie's Medi-bed. It is lovely stuff and one bale goes a very long way! It looks like chopped straw and costs on average about £6.50 a bale. I bought a pallet of it from the supplier (30 bales) and got it for £5.85 a bale and they delivered it for £7 too!! Not bad when you consider that I am about 40 miles away.
Oh forgot to say that I have rubber matting down in my boxes too....well actually conveyer belt rubber as my Dad is in the Quarry business and I got it for free!! |

We have one mare who is particulrly messy- does twice as much as the others and always mashes it, lies in it, buries it, eats the straw, etc etc. More, more and more bedding again is the best way with her.
We use straw as we get the enormous Heston bales delivered 2 at a time, into the stable block by tractor from our local farmer. he charges us £10 a bale and 2 bales easily do 13 horses for a week- and I am very very generous with bedding- all our stables are a minimum 12x 15ft (foaling and stallion boxes bigger)and they are bedded from to back with high banks and very deep. We find this works really well.
However a stud I know uses a variety of bedding types to suit individual horses and reckon muckier ones are better on paper or the cardboard.
Qui Gon Jinn- we were given some quarry conveyor belt for one of our stables which is very old with an uneven floor- brilliant stuff, love it!! Would love to get more of it but the guy who gave it to us has retired on health reasons now so probably not possible. |

I have to say i am loving hemcore at the moment, smells lemony fresh, totally unpalatable, never likeley to run out at peak buying times, light to move (unlike wet paper) and only requires one bale a week top up even for the 17.1 muck monster. :) |

Do you or anyone you know work in an office? The shredded paper can be used as bedding, and is free! |

As I said, don't take too much notice of the price on the main page, phone for the best price and it comes down substantially, I've just had 100 bales delivered for £3.93 a bale |
