Not really recycling - and definitely not moneysaving - but we are painting the inside of the (wooden) stables white to make the most of what little light we do get in there, not having electricity.
Look out for horsey car boot sales in your area to get rid of things you don't want and pick up stuff you DO need at bargain prices I've acquired everything from a farrier's rasp to horsehox windows that way!
We do also blag old cable reels from skips to wind spare electric fence tape on - saves the dreaded tangles!

This is a really cheapskate one. When certain freezemarkers send you brochures of the signs that you can buy you can laminate the pictures in the brochures and stick them on the stable door instead of buying them. If you have extravagant people on your yard who chuck out perfectly good stuff you can go skip rummaging and get rugs and cavessons that they have thrown out. |

Not sure how we could sort this one, but I have LOADS of stuff here I just don't want and will never use. But I know I will never get to put it on Ebay, it's just too much small gear, useful bits and pieces, bits, foal headslips, rugs, browbands, grooming brushes, feed bowls etc etc. I know others would use the stuff but it's too small or inexpensive to pack up and send. So how could we arrange an internet 'Car Boot' or charity shop? :-) An Arabian Lines Charity Stall? |

Mucking out, riding and field jackets - if you care more about being warm, dry and visible than fluffy pink and trendy, take a look at government surplus dealers (even market stalls). You can get EXCELLENT ex-police fluorescent/reflective jackets for £5-20! Best 'working' coats we have ever bought - esp. as we have to cross a busy road between the stables and farmyard.

Old car wheels ( not the tyre just the metal core) bolted to the wall near the tap, perfect for wrapping the hosepipe round. |

for non-slip numnahs sew a square of the rubber meshstuff to the underside of your existing numnahs. you can get the rubber mesh from DIY stores or motor shops, its used to stop tools rolling around.its realy cheap. it comes in several colours and is identical to the stuff on the non-slip numnahs which you can buy. |

feed straights instead of branded mixes, and get an old chaff cutter from a farm sale and make your own chaff, major money-saving and good exercise! |

Old golf bags also useful for carrying or storing leccy fence posts. I use the bag a folding deckchair came in ( never could get the chair folded up to go back in!).
An old plastic laundry basket makes quite a handy skip.
Toothbrushes for cleaning tack and hoofs.
Pad breastbar of trailer with old yoga mat wrapped in duck tape. |

Some of my electric fence posts are in the redundant dustbins left over from the days before Wheely bins were enforced! Whatever happened to everyone's dustbins (i.e. those who didn't have horse feed to store!).
My local farmer's going to roll us his own barley fresh each week, at a tiny fraction of the cost of mixes - to go with their chaff, beet and carrots. |

If you have rubber matting in your stables - use a NZ rug (breathable is best) instead of a stable rug - you can hose off stable stains easily - saves on having to put stable rugs through the washing machine
Vet Bed (doggy bedding) makes great saddle pads - easy to cut to the size you want - in the past I've bought a large roll of the stuff on ebay for the same price you pay for a small square from Vets/Pet shops. Also makes great girth sleeves - cut to size & get out the sewing needle! You can also fashion seat savers - again cut to size & attach elastic to fit.
Saddle slipping? Buy a large square of the non-slip thin matting (rubbery holy stuff!) that DIY, £ shops etc sell (to stop stuff slipping on work surfaces, car boots etc) - cut to size - works as well as the horsey non slip pads for a fraction of the price!
Cold feet, leaky boots??? Simply insert your foot into a tough plastic carrier bag before slipping your boot on - BINGO - dry feet!!!
Cold hands - A pair of close fitting rubber gloves (latex?) worn under riding gloves helps (no more wet hands as well!).

Judith...I have Reynauds and the cold feet and hands are an ever present for me in winter..constantly getting told off for taking my gloves off....I can't tell when my hands get cold (til they warm up again and get REALLY painful) Have just invested in some electric gloves and insoles...should keep me toasty this winter,
Nothing to do with money saving..but essential as I would like to keep my tootsies and pinkies safe for another winter!

Fab thread. You asked what to do about rosettes...Not exactly recycling and you might think this a bit morbid but when my old boy passed away I arranged all his rosettes in one of those big transparent bags that you get to store clothes in and then suck the air out with a hoover - it keeps them looking perfect, and they stay in place if that makes sense, and is such a nice tribute! |

Oooh, some good ideas! I particularly like the mounting block...
Here's my favourite: for bandaging hooves (ie keeping on poultices etc): old socks of varying sizes.. Squish poultice into foot, pull smallest sock on over top, then bandage. Sock keeps the poultice in place while you bandage. If the horse is staying stabled then a couple of socks (increasing in size) can be used instead of bandage but I recommend you wind tape (not too tightly!) round the top. And if you use a sock, some bandage, then hessian (tape the top of the hessian like a parcel) this will stay on even if your horse is turned out.
Collect odd socks from workmates, family, friends etc and keep in a bag. Much cheaper than bandages, can be thrown away after each use, and saves a lot of hopping around trying to find an extra hand when bandaging feet.
Grey Girl
PS I've got a ton of old rugs etc too - would a sanctuary like them? Some are pretty tatty (torn at chest) but would be fine for daytime use. I thought if acceptable I'd take them over sometime. Some are in lovely condition, but sadly who wants Lansdown NZs now? (waaay too big for my beloved). |

Being a 'canny' Scot, I love this thread, any help to save money!! This one is not a recycling tip, but it's certainly saved me heaps over the last year. My (then) 14 year old mare learnt to pee into a bucket (we call then chanties, north of the border!!) It saves me a fortune in bedding. She is stabled about 4 miles from home, so I don't manage to catch her everytime she needs to go, but we do mostly. She is so happy at all the praise she gets, that she tries her best, bless her. It was just a gradual thing but she learnt very quickly. It was just a case of keeping an eye on her as she was about to start peeing, then catching it and praising her to the hilt. My friend, who has arabians, is far ahead of me - her's actually come out of the stables and pee down a drain. I kid you not!! She has rubber mats and collects paper form the recycling place in town. I think her bedding bill is about nil. Another one for the masses who say Arabians are crazy eye-candy and not intelligent.

Hi Susan P,
I have only just noticed your lovely comment about Buffy, (Boudicca)Thank you so much. Yes, she is gorgeous, no one knows that more than her!! Her sire is Gillian Lancaster's Star of the Seasons and her dam is Naseekah, by Aurelian out of Patricia Ramsay's beautiful mare Bint Nefous. Patricia has amazing horses and is such a legend.
I feel so fortunate to know both Patricia and Gillian and their knowledge and help to me over the years has been incredible.
What arabs do you have and whereabouts in Scotland are you?
