My mum is currently studying for her degree, and as part of it needs a project. She wants to collect further data on foaling mares, having observed some interesting pattenrs relatin to AI, natural coverings and how it affects the mares acceptance of her foal....especially maidens. Mum's email addy is hilltia@aol.com
What we need to know: Is the mare a maiden? If not, how many foals has she had? Was she AI'd or covered naturally? If AI; was she scanned or teased to see when she was in season? Did the mare reject her foal, take a while to accept it, or take to it instantly?
ANY case studies are welcome, no matter what the outcome or form of conception was. Huge thanks in advance. Sam

My maiden mare was first served naturally and although she was a good mother she was not very keen on her first foal. The second time we had her AI'd, she was scanned in foal, and she definitely likes this one better. I felt it was more because she found the foaling a bit traumatic the first time, however it was easy the second time because she seemed to know what was happening to her.

My 1st mare was a maiden Anglo Arab She was covered naturally and was a complete tart she had a realy easy foaling and was a fantastic mum
Alliya is in foal now she's also a maiden she was covered naturally but it was not the easiest as she showed that she was fully in for 3 days but would not be covered on the 3rd so scanned her on 4th to see what was going on to find out that she looked like she would be ready on the 5th day so she had 1 covering on the 5th and luckly she took so we will wait and see if i am bringing up a foal myself or she's going to be a great mun fingers crossed |

There is a generalisation that maidan mares are not always 'natural' mothers. It has to be a learning curve for most, and they can be so much better with subsequent foals.
3 maidan mare examples, one foaled, took to foal, but when first turned out ran off to join her mates and left the foal completely! Second was over protective, less protective with following foals, third clueless and ticklish, very interested in foal but did not seem to realise she had any responsibility for it, much betternext time. All natural services and teased by the covering stallion. |

I've had maidens who have (initially) completely hated their foals and learnt to love them, maidens who have (initially) loved their foals and been slightly over-protective and then got 'fed up' with them, and maidens who have been wonderful mothers thoughout. None were a problem to wean. All were naturally served (I am an AI virgin).
Would be happy to elaborate on the above for your Mum's degree Sam, please feel free to PM or phone.
