Hi I cant help with the lumps, they cud be fly bites as the weatherhas been warm recently so all lots of fly hatchlings around.
with regards to mud fever i can help. i would either let the legs dry off andthen brush them clean or wash them with an antibacterial shampoo, aloe vera shampos are really good or hibiscrub and then towel dry them and leave until legs are completely dry. Then apply 'heel to hoof' ointment all over the scabby areas and put it on quite thick. Apply every day for about 5 days and then rewash the legs, dry and re apply untill all scabbs are gone.
The heel to hoof ointment is completeynatural and made from herbs etc. it makes the scabs fall off very quickly and it treats the wound underneath. Once you have got rid of the mud fever apply a barrier cream like vaseline idf u need to. the mud fever on my girls gets less and less every winter, i dont put a barrier creamon but the first sign of scabbs and i lather them in heel to hoof.
dont over wash the legs as this weakens and irritates the skin.
good luck
heel to hoof costs about £6.

Hi Emily, re the mud fever my boy has recently had it for 10 weeks or so, it was very hard to clear up. 3 courses of antibiotics and a very expensive tub of cream from the vets failed to shift it. £200 later the vet suggested I try treating it with iodine. I managed to get hold of some slow release iodine cream and it cleared up within the week. £5 tube of cream from the chemists one, £30 tub of silver sulphate cream from the vets nil!
I guess it depends on which bug it is causing the mud fever and what it responds to best, before I tried the iodine I had taken a swab and it was the results from this which made my vet suggest iodine. My vet also gave me some excellent cream called Dermisol which literally dissolved the scabs as Mali was understandably hacked off with me picking away at his legs. The Dermisol cost less than £10 and made both our lives much easier and less stressful so was well worth it coz those scabs have to come off one way or the other.... |
