For the first time in ages I have been to a Horse Sale today. It was in Carmarthen and was for registered Welsh Ponies and Cobs. There were some lovely animals there and I only saw one which was a little underweight, but on the whole a nice bunch of horses.
What I did see alot of though, was colt foals going under the hammer for 10/20 guinneas - a couple of nice ridden mares - 180 guinneas, mares in foal (stud fee £150) sold for 142 guinneas...... it is obviously the philospophy of the sellers that it was better to sell than to keep through the winter. All these ponies were fully registered with the WPCS which costs about £20.00 I was told, so some didn't even cover their registration costs.
It was nice that a couple of Aliners bought some of the foals - I am sure they will add to this thread.....
Where is the breeding scene going if you can't even cover the registration fee, let alone the breeding fee?????

I'm sure my new little lad will evoke some "choice" comments eh Jackie?
LOL
Still - i've got thick skin so i'll post him on here later and see what you make of him - he is definately a conversation piece!
& its a topic that could be perhaps a little close to home for some arabian peops! |

mmmmmm I think he will lol, but he is sweet and at least he has a lovely home with you.
I must say when I saw him the second time I wasn't so surprised
Again I say it was frightening to see the prices and yep the arabs, hunters and any breed could end up the same.....these ponies were from very reputable studs. |

Well you are making me wonder about your new addition !!!
Glad I wasn't there to see it ..... I'm sure a couple would've been Derbyshire bound which wouldn't go down well !!!!!
The breeding game is a sad affair. I have some of the best young mares I think I've ever had and they are all empty. But they are all happy and they are all safe and I like looking at them !!!! |

Had thought to go today since is just 12 miles or so away - looked at the online catalogue & fancied many.....but went off car buying instead!
So what have you bought??!!!
Talked to next door neighbour yesterday & he was off down to Reading market with some of his shetland foals - get better prices apparently. He said that there are something like 250 foals already entered for the next Llanybydder sale......... He also mentioned that Mr Gray is out & about at the sales dealing/buying/selling lots under the name Brown |
