Last Saturday my horse was trimmed for the first time in quite a while (she is barefoot and every time she has been checked out shes had a tiny bit taken off but nothing more) … this time he seems to have taken quite a lot of hoof off. In the past few months shes has ‘gravel’ in her hoof and has been occasionally lame – the vet/farrier came up and cut sections of her white line out of her feet. This last visit took a lot of the excess hoof off. By Wed last week (4 days after last farrier visit) she went really foot sore – we kept them in and the next day all four feet were swollen and puffy. By the evening she could hardly walk … her hind legs looked as though they were going to collapse at any minute! The emergency vet came and having looked at her decided that she had a reaction to mud rash (the Sat the farrier came we changed fields and I admit its slightly muddier) … shes been put on medication and although she is now walking her back legs still seem rather shaky .. anyone any ideas? Perhaps try another vets opinion? Shes not had her full week of medication yet … Could she perhaps be tender in all four feet following the trim? Or could it be something else??

They cut sections of foot off?!?! TBH without seeing photos it's hard to say but my gut instinct is whoever trimmed has taken too much foot off. The swollen legs could be a reaction to being in - one of mine had that when she had to be in for a couple of weeks.

It's definitely possible that if all 4 feet have been trimmed too much she could be lame in all of them but I'd expect she'd be improving by now. I know it's my regular comment but she couldn't have slight laminitis too, could she? Just thinkhg that the grass has been growing quite a lot lately and could be enough to show laminitis symptoms especially combined with the trim.

It might not hurt to get another vet's opinion if she's not right in another day or so - how much longer has she got to hvae on her meds?

I sometimes have probelms with one of mine when the farrier has been. He can sometimes look as though his legs are shaking slightly when he is standing still especially in the stable, it is due to too much heel being taken away. He is looking for the support, and when he has been trimmed , if it is slightly too short, his legs will shake. He does come write within a week or so, as soon as the hoof start to grow again. He obviously is looking for that extra support. Dont know is this might be some of your problem as well, but it does sound like the mud rash etc is more likely to be the cause of the swelling and lameness.

Both the vet and the farrier had cut sections from her ‘white line’ as tiny stones had made their way up there over time … that was back in June so when she was trimmed a lot of the hole created back in June was cut out. She also has a horizontal crack along her front right hoof but both have told me this isn’t why she is lame yet she’s still reluctant to put her weight on it. The back legs just look wobbly. Im at a complete stand still to what it could be. Shes not in the slightest bit overweight (if anything a tad under).

Is the vet saying its mud rash? A grey at work used to be absolutely crippled when he had mud rash. He was a bit wet though. Hope you get to the bottom of it and your horse is better soon.

Well about 2 years ago she got really bad mush rash and was literally crippled with it (but she had the scabs to prove it!!!) but shes not had it since … as from that Saturday that the farrier came we swapped fields and there is a large swappy goo they have to walk through to get into the field ... she thinks shes had a bad reaction to it hence why shes bad in all four legs but for some reason think theres more to it … its horrible seeing her in such pain yet in herself shes fine, alert, eating and her usual cheeky self!!

My miniature stallion is always lame after being trimmed, I now tell the farrior not to take too much off so his feet are a little long for what I'd like. My yard is gravel and he's so sore walking on it going to and from the field. Once he's in the field he's not too bad. He's still out 24/7 at the moment so its not a problem at the moment.
