Hi Kerry,
I have a very leggy 2 1/2 year old filly and she can be prone to lean spells! I have her on scoop top line, scoop alfa-a with oil and double scoop speedi beet with ad-lib hay. She looks amazingly well on this and has a good covering. She is out all day and stabled at night and rugged. This has worked well for her and also when she looses weight likes yours looses it on her hips.

Hi Taranstorm,
Personally id rather have the youngsters a little lean than having too much weight on, as extra weight does put extra strain on joints etc. They also have growth spurts every now and then, so a perfectly rounded youngster may suddenly change into a funny looking skinny 'teenager'. Ive always uded Baileys for my youngsters, and their recommended amounts always seem to work. It also put your mind at ease that they recieve all vit min and necessary protein for muscle development etc.
Even if you dont feed baileys, they are always helpful by answering questions you may have, so why not give them a call and see what they say. If you do feed baileys they will also come visit you and your horse to get a better idea and help you set up a feedplan for your horse.

Hi Kerry, I have a 3 year old arab who lives out 24/7 on grass. He seems to thrive on this and is only given a token handful of chaff and pasture mix each day so he doesn't feel left out when I'm feeding the others. I'd never dream of pumping loads of food into him to try to get extra weight on. Once he's matured, he'll grow and fill out as nature intended. His coat is shining, his hooves are healthy and I can't see his ribs.....so that's fine by me |
