Last Saturday I bought an 11yearold lightly fleabitten grey gelding from Melton horse sales. He is a pure bred arab but no registration papers. His name on his passport is "Spirit" and he was brought in by a dealer. In fact the only reason I bought him was because he was sold in the ring to a different dealer, and I could not bear to see this lovely gentle boy going from pillar to post. The owners name on the passport is a Miss Lara Mortimer from Magdalen, Kings Lynn. If anyone knows this lady could they please PM me with a tel.no. I do have her full address, but no luck with a tel no through directory enquiries. Spirit is a delightful little man with extravagant action, about 15hh, beautiful huge eyes, good bone and conformation and has obviously been well brought upin a past life. I have not ridden him yet, but he has apparently done some endurance and loves to jump. He has an old injury to a tendon on his near fore but is 100% sound. He is very easy to handle, and went on the trailer with no hesitation. I would really like to trace his breeding and history, and at the moment am at a loss to understand why he ended up at market being sold for an extremely low figure.

Interesting if you Google laura/lara mortimer - can only read the bit on Google as not a member of the forum but still worth looking at. He sounds a really nice all-rounder. |

I don't know if it is the same lady, but a Lara Mortimer is being sought by police in Sussex regarding the disappearance of a horse out on loan with her...she seems to have done a runner Hope its nothing to do with the lady you are seeking Annette.

Swalk,
No real distinctive markings, there is the injury to his near fore which has left a small hard swelling on his tendon. He also in his younger days would have had three white socks and one white leg on near hind, but these are now only noticeable close up. Has a small black patch on top of withers from either saddle or rug rub. His mane is very sparsefrom halfwy down his neck to withers, he has maybe had a halfneck rug on that has caused hairs to fall out. Not much help sorry, but will try and post a photo when I have taken some of him |

Very sketchy info Sue. This is what the dealer selling him told me, she had only had him a few weeks anyway, so endurance could have meant 10 mile pleasure rides!!

There's only three horses recorded as Spirt on the EGB site, two are Bay so that narrows it down, the third one(no colouror breeding recorded) was doing 120kms at Kings Forest in July and placed 5th. so unless your horse has come from the top end of the endurance ladder, with a very fresh leg injury, he's not recorded there...yet the 2008 results arnt up yet. On the endurance the horse has to keep the same name all the way through, so if he was recorded as Spirt he would have to stay..or add 1,2, etc. The persons name comes up as someone in Cumbria, doing endurance in 1988...so looks a bit scetchy on that front...and Pleasure rides don't get recorded in the results anyway. Maybe the down south info needs following up.... Good Luck. Sue |

Hope you find out more about him. I am having the same problem with my mare that I bought a couple of months ago. I think all passports should have at least the sire and dam on them and date of birth, but we haven't on mine. He does look lovely. |

What a lovely looking horse how on earth did he end up at the sales. I am so glad that you bought him rather than going to another dearler, well done.

Thanks for the lovely comments about Spirit. I have to say he is an absolute angel of a horse who has not put a hoof wrong since he has been here. My original idea was to find him a good home, but I have taken to him so much that he is here to stay! Would just love to know who he is......

I can't believe anyone would want to sell such a gorgeous looking horse to a dealer. Glad he has found a nice home and you want to keep him. I went to Melton Mowbray sales last Saturday and wanted to bring a yearling Section D home with me, but didn't have a trailer with me or any room as I'm on a livery yard. I wouldn't believe the state of the horses going through the sales. It was shocking. |

No Sue, I was at Melton on Saturday and the spotted 2yr old wasn't there.
Bearferret: I thought the condition of the vast majority was good. Melton is very rarely a sale these days where horses and ponies are in poor condition. From that aspect it is a better sale than many.
This last week I have seen Spirit jump over the elctric fencing in his field twice!! Once was when I came to feed him and he was the wrong side and came flying over it at the gallop, and then yesterday after he had finished feeding he ambled over to the fence, trotted the last couple of strides and popped over leaving his companion behind. I have mentioned this as it is in my experience very rare for them to jump over electric fencing and thought maybe someone would remember an arab with that trait that couldhave been Spirit |

Thats brilliant news about the filly Stagborough . So pleased for the owners that they have a happy ending.
Sue: Nothing has come to light about Spirit unfortunately, but I still have him here safe and sound. At the moment he could be mistaken for a woolly Welsh cob!! He has grown a great bear of a coat, that plus the fact that he has tremendous bone makes him look like he's just come off the Welsh mountains .
I am at Melton on most sale days, although they haven't a sale until mid January now and then only one a month until about May. If you need me to look out for anything just let me know. Not sure who the dealer from Glos is that you mean, what is his name? PM me if you don't want to put it up on here. One face who I haven't seen there now for sometime is the (in)famous Jamie Gray. He was a regular there until it all kicked off at the start of the year.

Hi,
I'm not sure if you've googled this woman's details but here is a mobile number 07833 026 255.
Hope you manage to find out who he is - must say, this woman sounds very dodgy.....
Good luck,
Lauren. |

Hi Lauren,
Many thanks for the number. Will give it a try tomorrow. Have never as yet found anything out about Spirit. I did actually get in touch with the Sussex police in connection with this horse and the said woman, as there was a suspicion that he could have been a stolen horse, but the horse they were looking for was a chestnut, so not Spirit. Have to admit though to feeling rather alarmed at the new thread about 2 more stolen horses with the same woman named. Spirit was also passported two days before the sale at Melton. The whole passport system really stinks to my way of thinking, but then it was never about the welfare of horses only the health and safety of people who eat horses. It is a total and unworkable farce.
