I finally bought some rubber matting at the weekend to make my mares bed more comfortable and hopefully save on cost of shavings. NO ONE TOLD ME HOW HEAVY IT IS!! Is there a hernia free way to fit this stuff or shall I book the osteopath now?

First, find a big strapping bloke.......then stand back and watch him get a hernia
It'll be worth it in the end, save you lots of time which means more time to spend with neddies - it can only be a good thing |

LOL.
Definitely book the osteopath (or talk VERY nicely to someone with well developed muscles) |

Agree totally, find a big bloke (or several). It is slightly easier to move if you clamp 2 pairs of molegrips on the pulling end to act as handles. I found the worst bit was having nothing to grip on to. If you need to cut it put a straightedge strip of wood under the bit that needs cutting which will help a bit to make it bend away from the stanley knife.
Defo book the osteopath though. Good luck, they are a real boon though once down. |

Just laid one of my stables at the weekend. As i have a broken rib i was puzzling over how i would go about this but luckily for me my OH came to my rescue, picking them up as if they were as light as a feather! I only wish he had been more helpful in the house, this rib is killing me!
In the past though i have man handled them myself. Rolling them and tying them with baling twine can make them easier, or just folding it over in half then dragging it along the yard. But ideally you need a hand. |

We tried rubber matting a few years back to see how it worked out.....WOW how heavy it is.....good job my OH is strong
Two years on.....rubber matting totally covered by bedding!! Found it too smelly (urine) and difficult to get up to clean underneath. Old fashioned me, I guess, as like to see my nags bedded down on a nice thick mattress.
I used to launder Rugs, and always knew which owners had their horses on rubber matting by the pong of their rugs, and had to leave them outside, as they stunk the rug wash room out!!
Still think they were worth having, as now my horses have rubber matting AND thick bed on top...........so for me no saving of labour but satisfaction of knowing my friends have extra comfort

I gave myself horrendous tennis-elbow moving the mats for my yard about 100 yards on my own. They're an inch thick & weigh nearly as much as me. I rolled each one up, tied it & heaved it onto a wheelbarrow & pushed it down to the yard as the drive down wasn't done. I think I did 12 of them & each was heavier than the last. The horses still have a full bed on top too! Duh!

Sounds like its time for my big strapping OH to pay back for his washing, ironing and cooking doing!! I shifted them on Saturday through grim determination. Nearly new and £60 so had to make sure that they were mine! I am paying for it now though. |
