Hi all not many people reviewing on the endurance page these days.
Went to Dukeries on the Sunday to do the 50km John did the 35km pleasure on our baby he loved it tired though, it was a hot day, slight breeze, nice to get into the forest to cool down. It was alsogreat to be back in front of Thoresby Hall spectacular setting makes the trip worth while, great marking and really cheerful helpers on the road crossings. Well done to organisers for a lovely day.

Hi Michelle, our baby is six, but he is still very green, we bought him at four as a skeleton, 15.1 from a dealer who had part ex him, with no papers she took verylittle money for him, his bones were showing everywhere and he had his head down between his front legs, he was so depressed. He is a wonderful lad but 15.3 now still needs to fill out much more hopefully that will come with maturity. he is full egyptian RA Scimitar / AK Zayannah bred by High Tor, we have now got duplicate papers after blood tests and a lot of investigation on my part and no help whatsoever from HT.
Oh 35km is just over 20 miles, he did a dozen pleasure rides last season and has done about six upto now, hoping to do a full season, then maybe do his novice next year, just have to see how he matures this year if not, we will wait, no reason to rush, especially if they have had a bad start in life. The main thing is he is very happy now and looks like a nun in his sweetitch rug from masta but it works he still has a mane and tail!!

At least hes with you now and like you say enjoiying life. Hes quite a big boy then? Sounds like hes still got alot of growing to do. My horse is an itcher too, he has a boet rug and hood, he looks like a giant teddy bear. He absolutely loves his boet and pushes his face into it, i think he knows it helps him.
He is very mature mentally and physically and so i think he may be able to handle some short social rides in August.

The Dukeries has always been one of my favourite rides and I made sure I always included it in Jameel's ride schedule every year.
We first did a pleasure ride there when he was 5 and then included it in his first season of novice rides with the EHPS as it was then.
Sadly we don't compete anymore. He has arthritis in one knee although is otherwise very healthy and still "not a novice ride"!!
I think 35km is 20/21 miles. I didn't do any rides with Jameel at 4 and then we did 4 rides when he was 5 at between 10 and 15 miles - really slowly though!! He was really babyish though as a youngster and really didn't come together until he was about 6 or 7.
My new baby is much more grown up and has a very low boredom threshold! I think I'll do a year or two of Trec with him first to occupy his mind without stressing young limbs.
If Trec had been aroung when Jameel was young, I think I might have gone that route too and worked up to the faster mileage a little slower. |
