After a disappointing visit to Ascot Sales with a rucksack stuffed with cash I came home and started looking on the Sales pages here and on other internet sites. I spent ages (2 days!!) deciding which ones I wanted to look at and rang the first on the list to arrange a time to view, a 3 1/2yr old 15.2hh grey arab gelding. I resigned myself to a year long hunt for the perfect horse and managed to persuade my mum that all the driving round the country would all be worth it when "the one" materialised.
Monday morning - rang up the owner of the horse I was seeing that day to check to make sure he was still there and double check directions. After much humming and aaahing we decided that as it was a 100 mile round trip we would take the trailer as the next 2 weeks were very hectic and we wouldn't be able to go back before the 18th!!
Monday afternoon - set off up the A1 to Castleford nr Leeds to meet Rio Danny (Geldings Sale Page). I had thoroughly grilled his owner about him as I was quite definite in what sort of horse I didn't want and he seemed to tick all the boxes re: height/age/experience/ temperament etc.
Arrived at the yard after getting lost and having to wait in Lidl carpark for Sam to come and rescue us to find a lovely natured, tall gelding that was exactly as described .
Watched him being lunged - laid back to point of horizontal .
Saw him being ridden through a construction site with cranes, diggers and huge lorries moving about - not a twitch.
I rode him - very green as you would expect but so willing to please and light off the aids.
My mum practically pulled me off so she could ride him (her excuse was that she would be helping me with him )- she loved him as well.
He was so lovely in the stable that my son was quite happy going in and patting him
Monday evening - Rio is travelling down the A1 to Blidworth!!! . I'm ringing up all the others we had arranged to see to cancel and say thank you for their time while my mum is driving and asking Alex to "check on how MY pony is travelling" . I can see I'm going to have to watch her .
He came off the trailer at my mum's house bone dry and really calm, had a look round and seemed to say "okay, come on then, where we going?" and followed us down the lanes to the field really interested but well behaved. We had decided on the way down to put him with the Oldies who have an 8 acre field to themselves with a couple of really big hills in it to try and help build his muscle up and to stop him being mashed by the resident bully, Zephyr .
He walked calmly into the field, said hello to the Oldies and then walked off and started grazing - all a big let down really We were expecting lots of trotting & snorting with his tail up and the Oldies doddering along behind .
Tuesday morning - went to catch him and he walked off!! Aaaahh - that's the downside . After a couple of minutes just following him round quietly and making a fuss of the Oldies he stopped and I could get the headcollar on him but he wouldn't budge . So cue 10 more minutes of just moving his front feet and inching our way down to the gate. Eventually got him to the gate and then took him for a walk to meet the neigh-bours . There are about 20 horses in the fields surrounding ours and they all wanted to say hello but he was really well behaved and minded his manners. Met a couple of my friends on their horses and they thought he was lovely (might have to buy some extra padlocks for the gate ).
Didn't do a lot with him yesterday as it was raining and I had to show my face at work but, big plus, he didn't walk off when I went up to him in the morning and in the evening he came to the gate to meet me. Mind you that could be because it was slinging it down, the Oldies were being grumpy about sharing the field shelter and I was carrying a lovely, snuggly rug LOL.
I've only had one moment of "ohh my god what have I done" since handing over the money and that was when I realised I had bought the first horse I had gone to see until my friend pointed out that, technically, he was the 30 something horse as I had been to Ascot and looked seriously at those there.
When I have more time I will post some pics up of him that my mum took during our walkies on Tuesday. Can't wait until next year to start riding him properly but for the moment we are just going for walks to try and build him up as I'm not very petite but hopefully with all the walking I should be.
Sorry it was so long but I've been dying to tell you all, just had to let a few people know privately as they were being very, very generous towards me & I didn't want them to think I was being ungrateful

Congratulations, he sounds ideal (looking forward to pics - pretty please) and obviously a very well adjusted young man!!!!
Hopefully this thread will disappear before Pixie returns from sunning her body in Kefalonia - kerweenie will most definitely stamp her foot once or thrice. Thankfully kerweenie is more than happy with her new chap, or you would have to hide your boy away with a multitude of padlocks

Congratulations on your new boy, he looks really sweet. Hope you have many happy years ahead of you.
PS Forgot to say, think you will get the Royal Seal of Approval from the Kerweenie. Don't worry, she has Saint Tayf now, so no need for padlocks |

Hi Paul - has anyone ever mentioned that you might be a weeny bit obsessed
No plans to race him next year - he is very "under-done" muscle wise and I think he will take a lot of filling out. He hasn't been starved or ill-treated but I think with him being tall (15.2hh) all the energy has gone into height not muscle mass.
At the moment the plan is to do lots of inhand walks round the woods and quiet lanes.
My mum recent bought a book from Amazon about straightening and strengthening the crooked horse which advocates work inhand in walk on small circles to get them using their backs and legs correctly. She has had great success with her horses in a short time - you only do 5mins every day - and was lucky enough to go to Germany to meet the author and take part in a 2-day clinic/seminar.
She is going to show me how to work Rio correctly and we will start this after Christmas. For the moment he is doing a very good impression of a mountain goat!! The big hill in his field looks like it has been lopped off a welsh mountain .
Uncle Blue has been teaching Rio his favourite game which is stand at the top of the hill, listening intently to you shouting him, wait until you have climbed almost right up to him and then snort as if to say "ohhh you want me to go to the gate?" and then leg it down the hill and wait at the gate for you
