My mare has not been right when ridden, I belive this stemed from a couple of months back when she had sevre teeth trouble. Once this was all sorted i spent some weeks bringing her back into work. Then about 2 months ago she didnt seem right on her back so I stopped riding her and decided to start lungining her to bring up topline and strengthen her back as directed to by a back lady. Still no happy i have booked a physio session with her on Tues (tomorrow) for a massage but I called the vet and after flexion tests on Friday she was diagnoses with Arthritis in both rear fetlocks and 1 front knee, i was completly shocked at this as she has never been lame or stiff before and has never ever been abussed when ridden in the last 3-4years I have had her, i guess this comes with age and she is now on bute. Yesterday I spent a rather lengthy amount of time chosing a suppliment for her, i settled on the american glucosime suppliment. Has anyone used this or can they recommend anything? also any daily recommendations anyone finds makes this easier to deal with. She is completly out of work other than walking now and will not be ridden again due to this making the back muscle to tense.

Try Magnetic boots - I've had great success over the years with Bioflow boots on stiff horses. Also we give our old Arab mare Fly NAF Superflex & also their Devils Claw - works a treat as shes very arthritic - we missed to give it to her for about a week over moving & she was starting to stiffen up - shes back on it again & OK now - worth considering as I've always found the NAF products excellent. |

I'd second the NAF 5* Superflex. My 30yo mares been on it for a couple of years & shes more supple now than she was when I retired her! Plenty enough for hooning about with the youngesters |

I used a magnetic strap on my old mare, Shaima, sadly gone now. It worked great untill she ate it lol, Wasen't funny at the time though. She also had devil's claw and carried on perfectly for a few years. Good luck with your girl. |

Sorry to hear your mare has arthritus, i know it can be very upsetting. I found out mine had it last year, being an arab I think she refused to show pain until she couldn't hide it...that might be a similar reason as to why your mare seems to have got it quite suddenly. Unfortuantly my girl also has asthma so I can't just lightly work her a couple of times a week, she needs to be ridden lightly every day. She can walk and canter, but wont trot. Poor Miska is a walking pharmacy ;D but i don't want to retire her as she is a horse that lives for going out and about.
When she was first diagnosed the vet recommended Newmarket supplement (i think thats the name?).
I hope everything works out |

The vet recommended any suppliment that contains glucosimine sorry for my poor spelling.
She seems much bouncer now she is on the bute, bless her, she is oly allowed walks and light work not ridden, im just enjoying taking her out for walks now, it may help me loose a few extra not needed pounds. I have decided to purchase another ridden arab, this will help me out as alaska has no field buddy at the moment on the yard so she can go out alittle more often with a buddy and ill have something to do some sponsored rides on, not rushing into it though, i will wait until after xmas and see how it all goes. I feel gutted, even though its such a common problem, it just rips your heart out a bit. |

yeah the problem is alaska does not like going out in the field that much, she stays for about 10-15mins before standing at the gate ready to come in. The little filly is with anothe little boy turned out in the day, she has a little boyfriend they are very cute. I would like another riding horse which can also companion her. |
